so i open the differential from my new e30 and im pretty sure it was filled with engine oil. I am getting no hint of a gear oil smell and its pretty clean. cleaner than my engine oil...

could this have caused damage? looks a bit thinner than a 30 weight, and for how clean it is the guy may have never actually ran the car like that. the guy i bought it from had it 'sitting' at the house and he claims it was sitting at the previous guys house. i need some insight guys.

im taking the cover off and ill inspect everything, what specifically should i be on the lookout for if it was ran with this thinner oil?

Obviously make sure nothing is visibly broken and turns smooth. Get a new gasket, fill with royal purple gear oil, re seal and enjoy. No?

id be putting RTV on both sides of it anyhoo. i can seriously just make my own paper one if need be. not a problem. $5 saved

would be different if it was like a rubber gasket of some sorts

iv made plenty of paper gaskets by hand at home without any problems, and iv seen plenty of people just use RTV on practically everything possible on a engine without problems.

not knocking anyone if they want the paper gasket

out of the few e30 diffs i have pulled apart. i have not seen any "cork" residue. always seems like a burnt paper gasket. just flaked off-kinda like how a old oil pan gasket would.
