blow in to the overflow tank while the bleeder is open, car should be off while doing this (after warming up to operating temp). Might need to be done 5+ times depending on how much air is in the system.

I usually go for the Prestone Extended Life. Maybe be a bit more, but should solve your problems. U want the no phosphates, nitrates, blah ,blah, blah.

I like to use a simple food thermometer in the rad to check if my tstat opens(fan kicks) at right temp.

Yes.

I'm not familiar with the M20 but does it have a bleeder screw? I was having a similar problem with my M30 and as soon as I used the bleeder screw and blew through that pipe I was all good. I mean it did heat up but that was because the air was getting out of the system and when it cooled down I added about another half gallon of water and all good. Also, I use that water that has no minerals in it with bmw coolant and water wetter.
