Hi guys I'm looking to buy a donor car for a 24v swap in my e30 and to sell parts off so I can make a little money back. I would just like to know what you guys think is the best car to purchase. e36, e34, can i use an e39 as they are easy to find in good condition with low miles. I'd like an m52 but I've been researching and I hear some say its easy and some say its hard. I know the m50 vs m52 topic has been cover many many times so really what I want to know is what you would buy as a donor car for under 2k.Comment

I know the m50 vs m52 topic has been cover many many times so really what I want to know is what you would buy as a donor car for under 2k.
Buying the E34 will net you almost everything you need and usually can be found cheaper than the E36. Then the only other part you need is the E36 motor arms (which I have a pair for sale ;) ) .
Positive:The E34 will be OBD 1 and you will have almost everything you need to make a full legit 24v swap right away. Once you have the BAR tag, you can upgrade to pretty much any other motor down the line without really having to worry about the smog guys noticing and it also helps resale value as most who've done the swap arent legal. A 525i can be had for VERY cheap and if you find a good one that doesnt have saggy door panels, or crap interior can net you a free car with a little work parting it out. Also, you'll never had to change a timing belt again.
Negative: You will be starting with a M50. The M50 for most isnt a BIG improvement over the M20B25 but its a great place and platform to build off of. Most likely will have well over 100k miles, but they are great motors and if they were in an automatic, probably havent seen much life over 3k rpms. Still will need to (or at least SHOULD) change all the gaskets, but may not need a headgasket, but this again depends on the donor car.
You can also source a E36 for cheap, but most of them are pretty beat, and then you'll need to source the E34 oil pan, pickup and dipstick.
They are fun cars. I fully rebuilt my M52 and have been driving it for just over a year and 24k relatively trouble free miles. Im getting close to taking it to the BAR myself, but Im pretty nervous. Im taking my sweet time to make sure I have all my ducks in a row for a trouble free inspection. fingers crossed and good luck

depends a 525 e34 should have medium case which means you would only haft to swap flanges and the rear cover, if its an m5 or a 540 those are large cases and won't fit without serious fab work. very few e39s came with LSDs btw so the chance you you finding one with an LSD is pretty low88 325is Five SpeedLachssilberComment
