      Just leave it registered in Oregon?!

        I guess what I'm really confused about is if I need to have it smog certified to sell in CA despite it not being registered here?

          I think if you sell it to someone who intends to keep it in CA, the actual law is you are supposed to provide a valid smog certificate that is within 30 days (90 days?), that way the new owner wont have any problems when they try to register it. No certificate means the new owner will have to smog it before getting a registration sticker, but technically I think if someone sold a car with issues, you could legally go after the seller for selling you something that didn't conform to CA law in the first place. The smog is "responsibility of the seller" but there are obviously a lot of transactions where that doesn't happen and even some buyers who work in shops or are car guys who don't mind if you don't have it because they can do it, etc.

          Is there a reason you don't think it will pass? (I don't work for the state of CA, btw.) :)

            No reason other than it being a 27 year old car, engine is stock and runs well, if a bit rich. Thanks!

              Honestly, I didn't think my out of state 325i would pass either, and it did on the first attempt. As long as your ignition system is not 27 years old, you use premium fuel, and a you perform a fresh oil change... might have a good shot as passing.

                      iX suspension is a bit different, as the front struts are shorter, and the springs are mismatched compared to a rear wheel drive e30 (iX front sport springs are actually OE Sport fronts for a rear wheel drive car).


                      On the subject of gauge clusters, has anyone had their printed circuit board fail within the cluster itself? My tachometer has been intermittent since I've had the car, and I had replaced the SI board with the m42 and it fixed the problem for a while but still cut in and out at times. Had the same problem with the m50, and with the s52 as well. Within the last month the tach has been completely dead. I replaced the SI board yet again and still no dice. I checked for power to the tachometer and voltage is present at the connector, so I tried swapping for a different tachometer and coding plug, but still no luck. Now the fuel gauge is acting up and always reading full, which was never an issue before. Now I'm wondering if the cluster itself is failing. Otherwise the speedo/odometer, mpg, coolant temp all work. All the fuses check out as well. Wondering if anyone has any other suggestions :???:

                          Yes, I've seen videos/heard stories of the circuit board going bad, specifically the soldered joints where components plug in. The DIY method just has you soldering all the possible joints, adding new filler to guarantee continuity. I've tried this with several joints, but it hasn't solved my coolant and gas gauge faults. A new Si board did solve my MPG fault though... just not those other gauges.. :(



                          But anyway yes some people have had success re-soldering the board.


                          When fully in doubt, send it to a pro, like BavRest up north. It may be worth the cost and prevent future frustration by tinkering further. I'm getting close to that point, to sending it out, and borrow a friend's car.



                          You could simply send him an email discussing the problem, he may have more valuable insight.

                                Its more suited for spirited driving and events because its not as stable feeling at speed like on the highway. Slight toe in gives the car a stable feeling that it naturally tends to self correct to a straight line.

                                I dont daily it because its a second car and kinda awful to drive in traffic coming home from work up the 405.... the zero toe doesnt bother me though.
