Dude....you serious? I almost picked up a square tail lights one (1974+) for $800 in running condition and worned out clear coat, this past weekend.
That car i looked at was also in a small fender bender, and had some quarter panel damage that could be salvaged and sold for more money.
Your buddy, is really out of the ballpark with this one, I'm not bashing but damn....... I guess I should to be asking for 24k when I decide to sell my car. Lol
