Are you asking me on a date? Have you ever seen the notebook where Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams get caught in the rain in a small row boat on that lake full of white swans and then they passionately make out because they still love each other even after all those years apart?

        Me either.

I met a girl this weekend that looked like Rachel McAdams. We didn't passionately make out but I did get a picture with her.

          to this

Looks like a drastic overhaul, but those are ALL bolt on parts

650cc on a single pot, 5 speeds, and up to 60mpg, can be had for ~2.5k
I think your picture is missing a second picture. I'm going to imagine it looks rad, man.

Assuming I get a bike for $3k and spend $1k on gear, what bike could I possibly get which would be considered safe? Won't be a new one, that's for sure.

But I'm curious to know, what makes it a money pit, how's it different than the e30 being a money pit (if you would so consider)? I'm a becoming a tech in school, and I work at a shop, which happens to be next to a bike repair shop. I'm looking at bikes with some popularity so at least parts will be available. Not to mention, there's less things to go wrong on a little bike.

..so yes, I'm asking how you know :P
I think the biggest thing is understand is that while yes on paper they may be easier for some parts, and easier to work on, that doesnt mean it is ultimately in the same ballpark as say an e30, any classic bike pre 95 does not have a ton of parts available no matter how popular they were unless they are a harley.

Bikes esp older bikes are very precise in how they work, in a carbed car if the carb is out of tune a little bit the car runs lean or rich and either gets hot or burns fuel, on a motorcycle if it is a little lean or rich. It doesnt run. And on top of that if the carbs are not synced properly, then it does not run. Most older bikes sit, make seals and gaskets go bad.

This is why JFarhanbod has spent 37 hours in carb work, becuase to fix the current ones were talking about finding seals to 4 carbs that are pretty rare, making sure they seat properly, and then syncing and if one seal is right nothing works. Then on top of that brand new seals are in the $700 range because they are only sold as NOS because nobody makes reproduction ones.

I have partially built 2 bikes and 1 complete bike, and I can tell you that unless the motor and carbs were in excellent working condition when we started, it quickly got real expensive.

So the key is find a bike that you like, that isnt crazy built, maybe its a cafe racer, theres some nice ones out there, keep it 500 or below. Make sure it runs and drives well. The minute the seller says it doesnt always hold a charge, or it doesnt start up right away most of the time, or you just need a new handlebar, walk away. It is not going to be worth the trouble of fixing it and theres a reason they are selling it.

Do not buy a 500T as you will never find parts for it, but if you find a 500T let me know because I always need parts.

Sorry for my super long rant, I hope this helps, if you want to know more swing by the Sherman Oaks meet tonight or any wednesday and I am sure several of us motorcycle guys can help you out

                    Yeah?

That looks like a soft wheel, maybe I'm wrong but my ACSs were all wonky and I took them to a rim shop to have them turned and balanced because they were soft wheels, they were able to take care of the unevenness.
I don't see why you couldn't do the same.

I don't think the issue is whether or not the wheel shop can "true" the rim once again, because any decent shop can make that happen. They sure as hell don't want to warrantee it or be liable if anything happens to the driver if/when the wheel cracks/blows up, causing a major accident/death.

Same reason most brake shops won't cut down a set of rotors, even if they have plenty of meat left on them. The liability isn't worth the nominal sum.

But this is all theoretical. I'm just trying to use my brain for once.
