Update: went to the referee station and almost passed with the exception of a few minor problems. First problem was that the air recirculation hose hooked up to the throttle body boot was kinked moreso that it should be. Next problem was that though my cel isn't on, there is a maf code still stored in the system somewhere. I'll have to get that cleared. And lastly, the car didn't pass smog requirements at 25mph. The HC output was a tiny bit too high. Everything else was within spec.

I had the car tested as a 1995 325i motor.

Sorry to hear you didnt pass the test, but I hear its real hard to pass on the first try. Thanks for the update!

I'm kind of glad that I didn't pass honestly. It gives me something to do. I've already replaced the kinked hose with the properly sized hose, I will change spark plugs later in an attempt to lower HC emissions and the CEL memory code or whatever will be cleared tomorrow as well. Shouldn't be much more to do. I will join the Ca BAR swap legal club soon enough.

Sounds good, and did they charge you anything since you failed?

It was free 99. If and when you do pass, you pay 8.95 for the certificate and the sticker.

Cool, and is there a limit as to how long you have to return to get it tested again? Or just whenever you get around to fixing whatever is wrong?

There is no excuse to not bar your swap if you are in CA.

I want to bar the m50 e30 m3 I just bought. E30 m3's do not have a check engine light and are obd exempt. WTF am I supposed to do now/?

                          Somebody isn't grasping the concept.

OBD exempt? Did you make that up?

You need to wire a check engine light.
