Isn't there a county near San Jose that doesn't require smog/visual or something?
And who are you worried about? Police? Your car looks mature and you mentioned having a wife right? Nobody is going to bother you.

Put the Euro motor in and smog it where visual is lenient.

I knowz plenty of retarded Smog Technicians here in the Bay Area that would not even know what the fuck they are looking at when they pop your hood, as long as all emissions devices are present and it will pass the sniffer.

You seemed like an eager Beaver about that, you could have just paid for that special smog and called it a day.

Well , the guy before me didn't have any problems smogging , so i figured why not ? Turns out to be a nightmare on my hands now... It's going to be a pretty penny.

Have to pay to play in Cali...or register your car in a smog exempt county. Good luck BAR'ing" your car.

is the ka motors intake carb legal??

if not, then i passed smog in SJ with both the intake and a non-carb legal exhaust.

just goes to show you what type of "visual inspection" they really do, motor is still an m20 though.

All these things are what's keeping me from swapping my car. Seems like it is becoming more and more expensive to get legal in CA.
My thoughts are if you get the swap looking as clean and OE as possible, forget the BAR, and go find the most shady, non-english speaking smog shop in the ghetto that you can. Hopefully they don't look too deep into the visual, focus on how it blows.

I did this with my Honda years back, as it was my only hope of selling it legally. Luckily I found some Vietnamese guy that didn't speak a word of English that just took my money, ran it on the rollers and sent me on my way with a smog cert.

People are too paranoid about 24v swaps. US 24v engines look right at home in the E30 if you actually did a clean job of the swap. You have to remember, Police aren't on the hunt for swapped BMWs, they're not Hondas.

PS, I've been running my car for over 4 years with the S50 and no issues. I don't even have cats.

I doubt an S50b32 can be BAR'd, legally or otherwise. Best to have it registered out of state. Be careful of getting caught tho, the penalties are huge.

That said, CA BAR isn't that hard for a US spec M/S50. I did a clean install, had "paperwork" documenting that it all came out of the same e36. All smog equipment was present. Act normal and not like a street racer, and I was in and out in 15 minutes. The kiddie seats in the back probably helped my case too.

Oh and the paperwork was all forged. I actually passed the smog test using ethanol instead of gas. Got the cat so hot beforehand it was ready to self combust. But do what you have to do.
