20w-50 is all i have done in all my e30 since 1999 and it's all I ever recommend for cali weather. My old porche/BMW mech suggested to not only use synthetic in our old cars because they were not built for them, at most do a 50/50 blend of castrol and mobil1. atleast that's what I do and I have a car with 250k on it still runs perfect and doesn't burn oil.

Sounds like a timing issue.
But also I was debating whether I connected some hoses under the intake correctly..

I figured out my problem! Messed up alignment from that damper with markings on it
