I did the e36 swap, but I was led to believe the swap was the same for both a z3 rack and e36 rack.

I thought so too, but these lead me to assume otherwise:

The second is a picture of someone who had to REMOVE the knuckle spacer e36 rack swap guys need because it would not fit when mated to the Z3 rack

There is a pretty good chance you won't need the knuckle mod with the Z3 rack. I didn't need to. Whether you want to risk having the car out of commission (or remove and reinstall the stock rack) is up to you.

          I have a z3 1.9L 2.7 rack, and I installed it with the AKG kit for e36. MY e30 is an 88 325is.

1990 airbag car here, Z3 rack installed with AKG spacers. I did not need to modify the knuckle to fit

Well.. I mean.. I guess it doesn't matter; I just realized AKG's Non-Airbag e36 kit comes with BOTH the rack spacers and the Knuckle spacers and is like.. $6 more. This way, if worse comes to worse and it doesn't fit, I'll have the knuckle spacers on hand

BTW, I wanted to answer this earlier. You should by an repinned adapter; something like this from MMW:
The page you're looking for does not exist. Please visit our home page or locations page for more information.

I had a buddy who repinned his own adapter and it fried on him a year later; this was about 2 years ago. Still hasn't drove the car since cause he can't find out what the problem is. You never know with electrical stuff. I know I'll be purchasing that wire harness, or something like it, when I get serious about an s52 swap

                You guys are too cool

Not even worth it. Go S50/S52.

                            1. Not enough gains to justify work done
                            2. Price

You're pouring $1000 to do the swap right (including engine) and your getting MAYBE 10-15 more HP than an M20. A good chip, injectors, and exhaust will run you around half of that and give you more gains. Plus, that's plug an play; with an M50, you actually have the issue with getting the whole new engine in there first

I personally don't think the swap is worth it at all, but to each his own

Simple math; it would be much cheaper to buy a m50 e36 or e34 to park next to the e30. No labor needed; same cost as a swap and you get to keep the e30

                              Also one obvious fact:

e34 is a much better daily driver than either e30 or e36......

The Bmw factory builds the best dd bmw's

An engine swapped e30 is a rocketship for lemons racing or nasa gts3/4; street daily and engine swap in the same sentence is counterintuitive
