NOR-CAL General Chat.
Fixed that for youIt had plenty of travel, I haven't noticed a difference in turning radius or available steering angle at lock. It might be a few mm less but any difference between it and Z3 non-M is splitting hairs.
E30: 36.5mm/rev progressive
E30 M3: 38mm/rev
E36 M3 (95): 41mm/rev on center, after first half-turn from center (200 degrees), 51mm/rev, progressive ratio
E36 non-M/M3 96+/MZ3: 45.5mm/rev progressive ratio
Z3 non-M: 53.5mm/rev linear ratio
I gotta say; day by day I'm loving my Z3 rack more and more. So easy to chuck, so easy to whip... Makes steering almost effortless. I never really thought about AutoX before, but driving this, I definitely want to
The m3 rack is a good compromise though if you still want the benefits of a comfortable daily (because of the progressive ratio). Not everyone will enjoy the extra 40% steering effort of the Z3 rack (it's very very firm, even with power steering). I've driven with both racks (e36 non-M/Z3) so I'm not just speaking OMA; I personally like the Z3 and lead to my eventual decision to go with that rack; not sure on the 95 M3 rack, but I can only imagine it will be similar or hardly differentiable from the non-MLast edited by JinormusJ; 09-04-2013, 04:39 PM.Comment

If you are speaking to me, the only thing I've done on my M3 lately is replace the heater blower fan. The bearing in it failed last year and I got tired of it making a horrific noise. It will need an oil change by the end of the month, but in that time I'll have put 800 miles on it or so. Yes, I lost the stupid clip to keep the shift selector rod attached to the transmission, apparently its a common thing and I haven't thought up a sure fire way to make sure it won't happen a second time. I'm thinking along the lines of either a cotter pin or safety wire. I don't know if the UUC DDSR is the solution to my problem or if its the solution to a different problem that will come up in the future but is not an issue now, but still won't fix the issue of the clip vacating (I haven't gotten a straight answer to that. Might fix it is the same as won't fix it in my book.) The only thing that doesn't work on the car is the a/c. I have all the pieces to fix it, I would just rather drive the car instead of taking it apart to fix it. Sure, a working a/c would make for a more pleasurable experience on days that its hotter than hell, but the rest of the time its a non issue.I'm talking as a race suspension point of view, although I have only a 5min drive to work. And also your're working your car everyday which means more maintenance and more money then if you had one of those piles of shit you mentioned above or a regular e30 3series. Others that say it sucks I have no idea, I would daily mine but the price of it keeps going up everyday that goes buy :)
Basic maintenance is required on all vehicles, the older they are and the more you drive them, the more they need attention. I don't trust other people to work on my stuff, so I'm pretty meticulous when it comes time to fix something as I don't want to do it again anytime soon. I'd be doing the same amount of work on a normal E30 in identical condition as I do on my M3 I'd bet. That doesn't make a car a lousy daily driver. Hell, the biggest downfall for driving my Datsun as a daily driver is the fact that it needs 98+ octane fuel to run/drive well. For running the 7 miles to and from work, its fine during the summer and winter as long as it doesn't rain. I can, and have used it for a daily driver for long periods of time in its current setup. Its just really expensive to do unless I detune the crap out of it to run on pump gas. That said, if I had to deal with stop and go traffic on a daily basis, the car would suck horribly as a daily driver for a whole list of reasons.
The M3 is comfortable, quiet, gets decent mileage, drives well, and reliable. Its nimble, and has fantastic visibility out of it. What more do you want from something you drive all the time? I'd say in a lot of ways its better than a civic, miata, corolla or something that most people consider great daily drivers. Its got more power, better visibility, better brakes, its more comfortable as well. It might lose by a small margin in fuel economy, but even that could come down to the individual driver. Its more than happy to cruise down the freeway at 70 mph, but if you have a back road, its equally happy to rip that up as well while being perfectly composed doing so. So what if it doesn't wake up till you hit 4K rpm, around town, you are doing a maximum of 45 on a surface street. Sure if you drive like a jackass around town, its not exciting, but there isn't a whole lot of excitement to be had driving around in a civilized fashion. If you want to drive the car hard, take it to a track where everyone else is driving hard and predictably (for the most part) and oh yeah, the M3 will be perfectly happy to play on a track as well assuming the parts on it are up to par (as with any car).
Sure there are other cars with more power out there, but what good does it do you when the speed limit is a whopping 45 and/or there is traffic everywhere? Whether you have 500 hp and 500 pound feet of torque, or 193 hp and 170 lb feet of torque doesn't matter because you can't use most of it anyway. Now, if you happen to be stuck with an Isetta or something ridiculous like that, yeah I could see how it would suck to drive daily. An Isetta is a far cry from an M3 in every respect however.
Hey, I'll admit it, I'm proud to have the opportunity to drive an E30 M3 on a daily basis. Its not something everyone gets to do.

The DSSR comes with a different style of clip that is a lot less flimsy. Doubt it will just pop off for no reason.
Those cars are great daily drivers because they get great mileage, you don't give a shit about them and they cost nothing to maintain, not because they have no power.I'd say in a lot of ways its better than a civic, miata, corolla or something that most people consider great daily drivers.
Actually a huge margin. Its got more power, better visibility, better brakes, its more comfortable as well. It might lose by a small margin in fuel economy
Even I would have a hard time getting 20mpg in an old civic.but even that could come down to the individual driver.
Well not if it doesn't appear until 5 grand.Sure there are other cars with more power out there, but what good does it do you when the speed limit is a whopping 45 and/or there is traffic everywhere? Whether you have 500 hp and 500 pound feet of torque, or 193 hp and 170 lb feet of torque doesn't matter because you can't use most of it anyway.
Look, I am going to get nowhere arguing with you, but the point isn't that the M3 is impossible to drive daily. It's that there is no power on tap when you want it or need it. You can argue that you shouldn't need it (ok, then get a civic), but I think we've all been in a situation where it's convenient to be able to squirt out into traffic. I chose my current DD precisely because it is torquey down low as I wanted something to contrast the E30's top-end nature and yeah, frankly it's quite a luxury to be able to punch it at 1500rpm and have it take off and I'm quite fond of the car because of it. The M3 IS a miata/civic below 5 grand. If you had to match traffic in a 50mph road in a hundred feet (and I've been in this situation driving a Miata, and it was scary), you would have to launch it.paint sucksComment
