The Tahoe was obviously hit low enough that the car that hit it acted like a wedge from underneath and flipped it.
Spending money on a cage because you saw one accident where a lifted from the factory (look at the wheel gap) vehicle flipped over is kinda a "knee jerk" reaction. Safety aside - From all the cages that I have seen in a vert there are very few that can pull off the look. There are some creeping roll overs that I have seen in the 4x4 world so not all of them are BAM flipped , dead. Some are oh , oh, oh, its gonna .. Damn! Kinda like blowing a load too soon. :)

If you are serious there is a guy in Campbell that builds 4x4 cages to custom specifications. He also does race car DOM tube builds to custom specifications. He can bend up the cage however you like and then tie it into some feet that can be bolted in to the e30 vert. That way you can remove it if necessary.

Personally, I would buy a JD Squared tubing bender and a 2" die for the same money and then source some 2 " DOM Steel tube. You would need a tube notcher and MIG welder. These items (minus the MIG Welder) can be had for sub 800 dollars and would allow you to custom construct the cage however you choose and at the end of it all you still have the tubing bender and notcher. The benefit to this approach allows one to weld in fancy gussets where they choose and rings or tabs to tie things off or secure things in cab (drink holders, dog leash tie off spots, etc)

I have the welder and could trailer it down from my place in NV. It needs a 220 plug to hookup and I have 3/4 of my large bottle left.

Ive got other references for 4x4 guys who build cages all day long as well being that I am a Jeeper as well.
I mean, I totally understand that in any situation I'll have a hell of a lot harder time flipping my vert than that tahoe. But I kinda like the look of cages to be totally honest and I've wanted one for a bit. This accident just made me think of it again.
I'd want one like this minus the leather. I think it looks great tbh

That cage is all tube and very few bends. Its not like a fully triangulated cage that a rock crawler would run. Its got the main hoop and the center reinforcement with tabs so it can be unbolted for more comfort in the rear. Then two diagonals and thats it. Very minimalist cage compared to something like this

Here is a great interlocking connector that is welded into the center of 1.75 " DOM tub (outer wall thickness needs to be .120 to flush up). 2 of these will allow one to untighten a set bolt (allen head cap bolt) and remove whatever tubing is welded to it.

You could remove the down sections or cross member this way. Just a thought.

Much more elegant than an external tab setup like in the picture posted.

And rodoni, would that be for a premade one or a custom one? I don't know of any company that produces e30 cages.
that hardtop you sold was TUV certified for rollovers...

How much do you think building one like that would cost? Would you be willing to help me out, paid of course? The locking design looks much better than a tab setup too.

Well, shit. Oh well. The hard top was a pain in the ass and I never used it. Much rather have the top down 99% of the time. I also think cages look cool as hell and I wanted one regardless.

                  Is you stoopid???

Well, I guess that's not my call. If it were me, I'd be rolling hardtop all day. Cages aren't OEM, and even if you could pull off one that looks like it is (I will argue that's impossible), you're still going to have to remove/install, just like your hardtop.

It's not my car, so it's not my call

I guess you could argue that you could actually have your top down with a cage, but then you'd secure your reputation as a hardparker

Here's my thing. The hardtop was nice with it on. But then I couldn't take it down on the fly, and it was such a pain in the ass to take it to my back yard sunroom to store it that I'd end up either having it on or off for weeks at a time. And at the end of the day, I'd rather have it off because I didn't buy a vert to have a roof on in. With the cage, I'll only have to remove it if I'm taking more than one person in the car, and even then at least they could sit in the back with it in even if that may be a little dangerous. I could make em wear helmets lol, or maybe have some removable padding for the diagonal bars.

I just didn't like having my hardtop on and I sold it for nearly 2 grand so it's not like it was a very small amount of money. What's so bad about a cage with the top down? I think the one I posted looks really nice.

Dont ride people in the rear if you have a cage. That is not smart.

At least not without proper restraints. Harness would need to be installed and padding on diagonals. Jeepers do this on trail rigs quite frequently. Its still a possible noggin buster... People need to consent and sign waiver LOL~!

I could always keep a couple motorcycle helmets in the trunk . But really I'd just take it out if necessary. That's why I want it to bolt out.

Speaking of motorcycles. Riding someone in the back of a caged vert is like riding two guys on a motorcycle ;) It shouldn't happen.

                                I'm just opinionated.

Every time I see a caged car street rolling I laugh a little inside. Unless the car is being tracked there really is no need

I'm a fan of sleepers. The more a car looks OEM/OEM+ the better it looks.
