I'd do an engine swap. Not sure why you're looking at it as an investment. A car with a bad engine won't be worth shit and you'll take a huge loss selling it to someone who can fix it, definitely more than the cost that it would take for you to just fix it.

You also have to consider a lot of things during a swap such as BAR, smog, doing it right, doing the "while youre in there things", and hope it all runs right in the end.

Steven said his s50 swap has cost him over 5k now, and he did it himself, NOT a shop.

I remembering getting a quote from a shop to do a swap and the cost was like $2500 alone for labor. That is not including all the parts which can run $2000+ easily.

That 5 K though includes consumable things like materials for his grinder to grind off brackets when doing an engine bay shave, bondo, welding wire, gas, and incidentals. Those things actually add up fast. One way to cut costs is not to do a completely shaved bay and to wire up the wiring harness without buying one already wired. Finding members with parts for sale to do the swap is another. I can be done for 4 K and maybe less depending on how long wants to wait for some low priced swap parts.

My advice is get on Eric (Cabriolet's) schedule of repairs and either drive it or tow it down to him so that someone who is very familiar with what needs to be done can do it expediently and at a "relatively" good price. It also helps keep his skills sharp.

Okay, so youre saying $4000. Thats a HUGE investment and commitment. And if Eric, or any shop for that matter it is also a time commitment while waiting for the swap to be done.

For someone on the fence of selling a car (that only needs a head gasket) $4k is a lot to drop.

It is a better "investment" to have Eric do the head gasket as well as some other things amd drive the car as is. Put that other $3k towards something more important. Dont trash a whole motor just for a head gasket.

Lucky you. I looked into a seat on Fifi, $1000ish is more than I can afford, but still its a chance to fly in a B29. There are lots of flying B17s but for now only one flying B29 (another should be flying by the end of the summer. It was pulled off China Lake back in the late '90s and has been undergoing restoration in Wichita since then. Its called Doc. Its supposed to make its debut at Oshkosh) I'm just looking forward to hearing the sound of 4 Wright R3350s flying overhead. Should be fun to do some sunset photography with them sitting on the ramp here. I didn't know Napa's runway was long enough to land a B29 on, but apparently so.

the CF filler plate is pretty neat-o, its too bad those two holes in it would not be covered by the CA plate.
