That should be a fun project. Is it just a restoration or will it be a race car?
Hahahaha, that is a very good question. It will have a roll bar in it (to help stiffen the chassis. They tend to flex a bit.) and likely a set of race seats. I'm not sure it will be legal to vintage race, but it might be a good car for doing things like the Snowball Rally or California Mele or something like that.
I think its going to become a track worthy driver. At this point, I don't know what color it will be, what the suspension will be, what interior will look like, or even what wheels will be on it. The engine is going to be stockish, not sure what transmission will be in it. Lots of unknowns here.
finally all caught up....
ive been missing out on this thread.
been contemplating getting my own 24v to work on over winter.
m20b27 power isn't doing it for me any more, even with the turner chip.
its not so much the power or torque, its the power and torque combined with a short rev range.
so I'm thinking probably m50/52 with s50/52 cams. we will see about that tho, my job sucks and barely pays the bills with only a small amount left over every month.
You should go with a M52, keep it OBD2 if you arent worried about getting a BAR sticker if/when you come back to CA. They made enough of them that you should be able to afford it fairly easily.
You can always add the S52 cams and a reflash later. Also, already having a Turner chip, you can probably send it in to them and get a new one for $100, though Im not sure if they would be cool with that since you are getting a chip for a different car. I have sent them their chips back twice. When I first got my 413 ecu it had a chip for a M50 with S50 cams, sent it back and got a S52 with 3.5" MAF program for my first setup, and finally one more time for a S50 tune with 21.5# Injectors. $100 each time.

Currently working on that. Trying to get employed through the local electrical journeyman apprenticeship. Just waiting for
My placement.
Other than that I'm providing, she's going to school. And I certainly cannot afford school lol.
Well if you're going to do a 24v swap, I'd suggest a budget of $5,000 by the time you're done (assuming you do the work). In the past year or two I've done 2 swaps and that's the price point.
The first was an s52 into my e36 328. Albeit a plug and play swap, the motor was $2000, and another $2000 refreshing everything aside from the headgasket.
The 2nd swap was one I helped my friend do to his e30 convertible. We started with an e34 m50 that he got for pretty cheap, but by the time we were done refreshing everything and the swap specific parts, that was easily another $4000. We got the car BAR'd but to be fair the exhaust only cost $500 bucks to be adapted with CA cats. You can skip making it CA legal, but nowadays the swap is so well documented there's no point not to as very little needs to be retrofitted.
Your other option is to to an "i" swap or stroker (probably similar money if you do a rebuild, as opposed to finding a good condition 325i motor which could be done for much less).
OR.......as Decay pointed out, the secondary education path will let you make more money down the line :)
i paid much of the rent when my wife was getting her masters. and now shes floating me as i get my BS.
i'm not telling spency not to do it.
i'm doing it again right now. new gf is a dental assistant, wants to go back to school to become a hygienist, because the difference is $15/hr vs $50/hr.
just saying. vet the girl as a long-term prospect before you invest in her.
and don't build cars you can't afford to build.
related: doing the walk-through on my new place next weekend. it's been more than 2 years since i've had a place i can turn a wrench in. i am impatient as hell to just get this shit over with.
