Until the last few months I've always had 6 cylinder e30's and e36's. My little m42 is fun to rev the balls off of and maybe a bit more balanced, but the term "delicate" certainly hits the nail on the head. I'm trying my best to keep the car an m42, but if that motor blows, 24 valves will be moving into that engine bay.

In it's defense, the m42 was a sample of the technology to come in the m/s5x motors of the near future. From a strictly e30 standpoint though, I have to say the m20 in all its archaic timing belt snapping, valve smashing glory is more fun to work on and sounds better, but that's just me....or maybe I'm just getting old

timing belts only snap went neglected. but now days it's only a $300 repair for parts and labor every 5 years. it's a cheap expense for a fun engine.

        Sorry guise

But after getting this 540i, anything with less than 8 cylinders just isn't fun anymore

My heart will always be with the m42. It's slow but it's so very fun. It's also the motor that I tried to run from the police with on I-80 and crashed into a large tree in front of UC Davis and then went to jail for a few months.

          God I love that motor.

The E30 with an M20 is way more fun than the E38 with a 12 cylinder...

Yeah, but the night before the accident was epically insane. Spent the night at Sigma Kappa sorority house at UC Berkeley. Ex GF and I did all kinds of wild college stuff. I can't say that I was particularly mad at the whole e30 accident because it was a simple consequence of my action. I paid for the whole thing, and I moved on.

The 1600 accident was way more fvcked up though. That one came out of no where, was completely unwarranted, and left me bedridden for weeks. F that accident.

But I'm good now. I had time to recharge, bought a bunch more cars, building a few now, started another business that is gaining traction, which let's me do more things. I can say that the 1600 accident was in a sense, a blessing in disguise, and I do thank God for letting me live through that one. The Fire Department chief called me a few days later to check up on me. Said he has never seen someone survive a front-end collision like that in a pre-airbag car. Told me to count my blessings.

But yeah, don't run from the police in an m42. Even if you did it once and were successful, chances are your name isn't Paul Walker. It just won't work.

6/10 would probably not do it again.

I remember meeting you before that at euro sunday Sacramento. Your car had holes in the trunk lid where a ricer wing would of mounted.

I ran from police once, and only once.

I was 19 or 20, so still a Toyota guy at the time, driving my Celica All-Trac (the one that was 3SGE motor + turbo + AWD).

I was coming back from visiting family in Sacramento, on that super-tall interchange that used to be somewhere around Walnut Creek that doesn't exist anymore.

Dude in a Nissan S13 spotted my car for what it was and rode my ass, and we both hit the end of the interchange somewhere in the low triple digits.

I checked his position in my passenger rear-view, and saw a CHP Crown Vic lighting up the rear tires, wanting one or both of us.

                                "Oh, fuck."

I doubled down on the throttle, took the next exit, disappeared into residential Alamo as fast as I could, and sat there and sweated for half an hour before getting back on the road.

I will never do that again.
