niiiiiice! it's working great so long as I don't charge my phone with the cig lighter. Only then does the alternator whine crop up. What's weird is it only sometimes does it.

I haven't tried the other method you PMd me yet, this seems to be fine unless I charge the phone.

i think it's probably the power through the cig lighter not being filtered good enough to deal with noisy 14V before being put through the phone's op amp. A better car charger might address this.
