I have heard this brought up before. To me, it makes more sense to say "The" because it references a place (which SoCal people spend lots of time on) instead of just a number. "Just take 22 to Corona" ...take 22 of what? "Just take the 22 to Corona" is a clear reference to highway 22. Also, there are a lot of highways in CA vs other places. I think some states have like two major highways intersecting in the middle. No confusion there. I believe Norcal people drop the article as well, however, nearly all of their freeways end in "80" so there's less confusion...80/280/580/680/780/880...everyone knows them to be freeways vs socal's (LA area alone) 110/101/105/91/405/60/10/170/22/55/57/15/605/710/5/91

              Colorado: 25/70/76/87
              Providence RI: 95/195/295 ...very easy.
              Oregon: 5 and 84?? that's it??? wtf.
