    S54 swap CA legal help

I am currently researching and saving for the S54 swap in my E30 and i don't want to go through the hassle of swapping the engine for some guy to say it passes smog.

I do not have an issue swapping out the smog parts and such i am just curious if.

Will the E46 OE exhaust manifold fit on the E30?
What parts do i need for all of the smog equipment.

the rest i can handle no problem.

It would be the process as BARing a s52 you just need to make sure that you have a bill of sale, vin from the motor and all of the s5xs original smog and emissions equipment ( yes the includes headers) I'm sure there's some other stuff I'm missing but other guys can give you more info then I can

Ok i will be getting the engine either from a reputable BMW junk yard or Ebay lol. Would the resept be considered a " bill of sale ?"

And what exactly is the emissions equipment on the S54? Sounds like a dumb question but people dont tend to post about the smog equipment lol. And bmw will just give me a 300 page list of every bolt nut and o-ring .

Since ur in auburn you should contact ryan gangemi @ ryang motorwerks. He swapped an s54 in his own e30 m3 so I'm sure he can help you with whatever you need.

^ I think that the OP must have an m3, and RyanG put an s14 back into his(OP's) car.

Because The BMW E30 is the single best car in the entire world, I'm really happy you want to perform this swap.

The guys at the BAR Ref locations really want to see you succeed in upgrading a less efficient and higher pollution engine into your older car, I know that if you were to go to them, they would be happy to tell you everything that is needed, and everything they will inspect for the visual portion of the inspection to approve your swap. If I were you, I'd plan a time to go speak to them.

Here is where you can find the info.

Referee Centers are located throughout the state at various California Community Colleges. To Make a Referee Appointment call (800) 622-7733 to schedule an appointment for a Referee Center inspection.
The guys you will meet are also car guys, and like I said, they want to see you pull it off, and jump through all the hoops.

              Good luck!

What if someone from out of state,Moved and had to change registration on a Motor swapped car?

                      Example M60 in a E28?

youd have to have all the CA legal smog equipment becuase you will need to smog it. CA hates cars i swear.

You need to have your s54 swapped car OBD2 compliant.

Everything from intake to end of catalytic converter must be from factory from an e46 m3.

My understanding is the easiest way to do that would be to get a whole e46 m3 and use the whole wiring harness in an e30.

You would need to have a functioning obd2 port to plugin.

Ca is supposed to eventually let obd2 cars be smogged simply from plugging into the obd2 port and no sniff test.

there is a gentilman on this site who actually has a harness with the proper set up on here for that. And i was planning on having that for that exact reason. ......i almost wonder if i could get another states PO box and reg it at that PO box cause i have a friend in Colorado who would be down for that or even just use his address. As long as my car seems inconspicuous like it looks stock with Colorado plates generally a cop wont bug me. Would anyone suggest going that rout? I could just say im viseting for a few months with family or some BS.
