    Same problem....

I have the same problem. My 84 e30 318i failed smog test today. First try is high NOX/Gross polluter. Went to muffler shop and replace the cat and retest it... failed again. I guess ill try to replace the O2 sensor and coolant temp sensor next. Is their anybody in SD area who could do for reasonable price? Help please!!!

I replaced the coolant temp sensor, ran 100 octane fuel in it and it still failed:

15 mph (max 815 ppm) my measurements (843 ppm)

Going to replace the catalytic converter and O2 sensor and see if that helps.

Dude 100 octane is worse for your car. It's literally harder to burn, especially since the cr is like 8.5, not something particularly high. You end up having more unburnt fuel in the cat. Although I imagine your car failing is due to some other issue I can't put my finger on. But hey, mine doesn't pass smog either, so what do I know..

The o2 levels are pretty low co is above average co emissions is control by the o2 sensor would recommend replacing o2 sensor first since that will regulate your fuel mixture should help with your NOx problem.

I tested the o2 sensor a couple of months ago and the readings were good. Maybe i'll just replace it anyways.

Before you spend more money I suggest you log on to the smog website California has for cars that have failed smog. If you qualify, a 500 dollar voucher will be given to you for emissions repairs. The website is listed on your smog results
It's the small details that count.

                  Known as the CAP Program

and if you need more free dough for repairs

As a last resort find someone that lives in a smog exempt county. Or if you need time find someone that lives out of state like a family member or friend and claim out of state residency for the coming year. DMV will mail whom ever you choose your tags and just have them mail it to you.

Have you replaced the fuel filter? Last time you had the valves adjusted? Definitely try the voucher. Maybe clean up the afm.

I'd try a 1:1 ratio with a couple gallons of 91 and e85 first on a low tank. Minimal $$$ and effort needed.

I have been hearing a couple of people telling me to try E85 but I have not tried it yet.

Any update on the e85? Probably better if you mix 3:1. Plan on using it Monday morning since I failed today. Going to check picknpull if I can find some larger injectors to run full e85.

In 4 results with 100% e85 on an untuned ecu.

Seriously, if you failed there's something wrong

I haven't had much spare time to work on the car, but as soon as I do will post it up. Im getting tired of driving my car without any tags

E36Hater on bf.c had no problems on his m54b30, just went to a larger injector size.

If you're referring to me, you're right, the guy doing the smog test is what's wrong. But for the OP, sounds like he's already past due and doesn't have the time to find what's wrong. Mix in some e85 just to pass, then spend the next two years diagnosing. Goodluck OP don't get

Thanks man going to need all the luck for this car. It seems like as soon as my swap was ready to drop in things started to fall apart for me with this car.

Also how much E85 should I mix in before I head to the smog station
