Shit. Traffic through there is already fucked WITHOUT the road construction.

No, traffic south of Tacoma is basically non-existent.

people panic if they see 10 cars on a street

It might be a longer route than I-5, but it would sure beat sitting in traffic. Look in to getting off the 5 at highway 12 and heading through Mossyrock and then to Morton. At morton you get off and head north towards Elbe. At Elbe you get on what I think is 161. That takes you all the way in to Puyallup where you can get on 167 north to 405 and then I-90. The drive is really nice from Morton until you are almost to Puyallup.

This way. You could also take 7 in to Tacoma rather than getting on 161 to puyallup, but I think that'd be longer.

                          I was thinking:

                          Portland Oregon - Centralia WA

                          Centralia WA - Yelm WA

                          Yelm WA - Spanaway WA

                          Spanaway WA - Tacoma WA

Just over 3 hrs travel time and it also takes 7 into tacoma.

Why do you need to go back to Tacoma? The Picnic is in Issaquah... And you'd have to go to Tacoma from Issaquah anyways if you're going there afterwords.

I know the route will work. I grew up in Puyallup, and my best friend has a house on Mayfield Lake in Mossyrock. I've probably done the drive a hundred times. The drive is also very scenic and there are some good twisty roads.

uhmm FAIL its not at XXX this year dude.

Got the dates set for the 2010 E30 Picnic. 9th Annual I think?
                              June 26-27, 2010
For sure one change in venue, possibly two.

The Sunday Picnic is moving to one of the lush green lawns at the LeMay Museum near Tacoma. I felt we have outgrown the Triple-X. The Trip-X is good for a car show of 100-150, but not for 240. And a change in scenery every so often is nice to keep things fresh.

If Griots Garage have their new headquarters finished, then the Saturday Tech Session will be at their new facility as well.

The new locations also allow us to push the date back further into June. This allows students to be out of school, allow a few more out-of-staters to consider traveling to the event, and better chance of good weather (though I hope this does not jinx the great weather we have usually enjoyed).

Performance BMW Magazine have already indicated they want to cover the event next year.

About time to get the E30 Picnic web site updated with a new countdown clock?

Looks like the portion from Yelm to Tacoma is the drive afterward after the picnic (just the other way), so you'll know the path. Keep in mind, traffic through Yelm can stall and break up a long line of cars with all the stop lights.
