    Utah 325ix build

So I have never been to good at build threads, but figured I'd start one anyways. What the hell.
I bought this 88 ix for what I now determine to have been too much money, but it still wasn't that much.

Body looks pretty good on the car, but the mechanical side is getting a full once over.
Engine block should be out of the car tomorrow, and hopefully machine shop next week. Any advice on where I should take it? I was gonna call the guys at Utah imports and see what they think as I used to race against one of their mechanics.
Car will get the engine refreshed (rebuilt? but with mostly same parts?) and will get all new suspension bits including bilstein HD, H&R sport, all new bushings, new ball joints, etc. Basically doing everything I come across in the process of the engine and suspension rebuild.

I will do my best to keep this thread relatively current, and ask questions. Also, if anyone wants to help get this thing all hooked up again once the rebuild is done, bring it, I'll buy the beer!

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.

        I'm right in SLC.
Engine will likely be stock as it will be a daily driver, and compete occasionally in the STS? STX? class autocrossing.

Any tips on where to take the block and head for machine work? I talked to American Automotive Machine today, and they sounded ok, recommended by Utah Imports where I know a mechanic. Any other recommendations?

Hello Driftin, Im new to the E30 crowd and also in SLC. I can lend a helping hand (wont have much indepth knowledge since I have only worked on Audis) but I would love to look over your shoulder and learn a bit since I am basically going to have to do the same you are wanting to do, engine rebuild and suspension overhaul.

So I finally got around to getting the motor out. I will be working on it tonight for a couple hours, and hopefully will start taking some pictures so I can document the process a little better.
The pile of dirty parts has gotten pretty big. I think I need a bigger parts cleaner.
Also, since I'm in there, I would be remiss if I didn't put a new clutch in. I know nothing about e30 ix clutches. Is there one in particular people have had good luck with? I know awd cars that are driven hard can be rough on a clutch.
I did just put a 6 puck unsprung in my MR2 turbo, and I like how positive the engagement is, but this is a different beast
BTW MR2 is for sale. Pm for pics :-)

Just ran across this thread and think that I met you the night you bought this car...I was also looking; I hadn't test drove yet and we went together as you came up to purchase (I mentioned that I thought the head gasket was shot or perhaps worse - a cracked head as the smoke that this beast was spewing had me concerned). Car wouldn't hold a charge and the sunroof didn't work and it was repainted...any of this sound familiar? I would have been in my 1989 325is
