    Like I said, was going to be strictly track car, once he said he did have the title, I stopped any work I was doing on the car so I wouldn't be screwed if we trade back

                This bears repeating. OP, you dont legally own the car.

                Trade the car for your stuff and buy a different legit car WITH A TITLE YOU FOOL.

                    That said OP, they are all correct, don't buy car w/o title, and at least try the DMV and see what they say.

                                    At this point, I would seriously walk into the DMV and see what can be done, and what legal (or semi-legal) paths can be taken.

                                            try going for an abandoned title claim it will cost around 300 to do this from various companies but since you have a bill of sale from last owner it might be a little easier since they dont have to track down the last owner
