    m20 Timing belt Crankshaft Gear

I know this is the mountain section but lots of experienced m20 mechanics in here...

Maybe there is another name for this, but the PO said something fell in between the timing belt and caused the timing belt to break on the 86 325iX that was on here a few months ago. I picked it up for those of you that didn't know and am rebuilding the top end of the m20 since it had an '200' head from an eta instead of the '885' i head. Car in question

At any rate, I just popped off the ac condenser line to see some brown gooey mess come squirting out. Upon clean up I noticed the gear somewhat broken/stripped on (i think) the crankshaft drive gear. Notice the gear teeth closest to the camera. I'm not sure if it goes all the way around the gear, I didn't look. Here is a close up:

I'm thinking I should replace it even though it could probably work the way it is.

So my questions are, how hard is it to at that or get off?

is it the same as this?

Is there anyway that I could screw it up if I replaced it and put it back together wrong (throwing off the timing of the cylinders)?

What do I need to do to replace it?

Thanks guys, might take a little longer than expected to get it going again.. sigh.

On the bright side I got the Husco arm rest installed!

and you can still see cross hatching on the cylinder walls! Odometer is at something like 218xxx miles and idk if it works or not

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.

I'm pretty sure you just remove the crank bolt and then you can remove it.

Yeah, you just need to pull the crank bolt, and pull it off with a puller.

I've got an extra one if you'd like it.

fat chance you can get one off in a junk yard unless you have access to air tools with min 120psi. need 22mm socket, lots of air and stay on the nut with the air tool off and on unless it spins loose. Id say it too me about a minute before it finally came off. You may or may not need a puller. mine slid off once the bolt was out. if it gear pulley isn't coming off; get a pry bar screw driver and gently try to get behind it to work it off or use a puller if you have one handy.

Highly advisable to NOT use the existing crank gear...you will strip the timing belt.

oh and if you manage to get it off -remove the gear pulley top right and then you can remove the front cover. to change the gasket behind and the two seals. you will need to get the seals in, either by even pressure of a socket, or what have you. When installing the cover lube the inner surface of the seal to make sure the seals slide over the shaft without pinching or tearing it.

note: 3 oil pan bolts hold that cover on from below. Make sure you don't tear the oil pan gasket while removing the cover.

I took mine off since I needed to change the pan gasket and various seals since the motor was covered in grease and mileage was at 320k kilometers. it was one of those things" while you're in there."

I think it is part number 11 on this diagram.

It should be universal, anybody have one? Found one at the junkyard but forgot my breaker bar/ impact wrench...

^^ LMK if you end up going back out after the one at the junkyard. I've got several sections of pipe that can be put together to form a nifty breaker. Used it to pull the crank bolt on my S2K this spring, which was torqued to ~140 ft/lbs. Came off like buttah.

Half the problem is the pistons move.It is an automatic and it looks like the torque converter is toast. Any suggestions?

Torque converter should be fine. The engine won't be locked by the drive-line like it would be if it were a manual in gear (else it would stall out at every light).

                    You need a pneumatic impact.

How do you keep the crank from spinning? I've heard a screw driver is not strong enough to hold it.

Or does the impact wrench torque the bolt so fast that less force is necessary?

                        Crank pulley tool or this:

If your impact is adequate, you don't need to hold the crank. Electric impact usually is inadequate though. Air only.

Well I sprayed liquid wrench on it for a few days and knocked it with hammer a couple times before spraying it and letting it soak over night. The electric impact did the job. For future reference the bolt is not reverse threaded and I didn't need a puller to get the old one off. Here is the old one, sheared all the way around. The PO had to see it because there were no metal shavings in the tray under the gear.
