            Thanks guys!

Now the base color is on.

And we start to lay out the grid. The little blue dots remind us which fields will be white.

I think you are in the running for "most difficult paint job on a racecar" award!

Looks cool when done, but man, glad I don't have to tape that off..

Yes, well we joke that if we're going to wreck the car, wreck the front end, and save the flag. And if you're going to hit us, aim for the front.

If we were to do a new car, with the same motif we would do it as a vinyl wrap now. But for this repair we figured we'd bring out the blue tape one more time. There are 6 colors to be applied. Red, purple, lt. blue and 3 shades of grey.

I imagine vinyl wraps would be far less money and hours than the method you are using. We not do a vinyl wrap?

For a whole car, yes we would do a wrap in 2011. But for this project, with just a quarter panel and door, we're doing paint one last time. We already have the pints of paint. Plus this way the colors we know will match.

I do have one bid for doing the back half of the car in a vinyl wrap should we do another car. that bid is $1,500.

Here you can see that we cut back half of the tape to get nice corners.

                        And more fields cut:

                        Up close:

Then we mask out the areas to remain white:

There is no difference in the blue vs. green tape. We just had two rolls available.

So going from the white paint to the final shot in this post was 7-8 man hours.

What is your shop rate? Seems right there is your cost. I have not done any vinyl layups but 1500 seems expensive for the just the back half. Still I like seeing the craftsman work put into it.

Best of luck in the remaining portion of the season.

We were joking that if we had a second car, we'd do the flag in these neon colors and it would be like on an acid trip.
