That's just blatantly wrong is the thing.

Response times in webapps are just as good as they are for native. If you're talking about buttons looking correct per platform, you can do that with user-agent string detection and just CSS it to match whatever platform.

The intrinsic annoyance that is having to download and install crap per platform and do platform specific updates and all that nonsense is what pisses me off.

My idea centers around essentially going to a randomized link like thing.net/aDSLFKJ and anyone who goes to that link is put into a room (or you password protect it or whatever) with the other people in your group, along with a fatty map showing position, distance to next person, distance to leader (in time, miles, whatever).

Unless you're needing camera access (on iOS, since Android supports camera in HTML5 support) or a TON of offline storage support, there is no intrinsic benefit to natively coded apps. It's ignorant and silly to say that they automatically give the best experience.

That would handle that aspect of it.

Than may I suggest a new platform? I'm able to update all software in 3 "clicks", minus entering my device password. Downloading new software takes knowing the app's name, and a similar number of clicks. Give me a name and I bet I can start a download in 10 seconds.

That sounds like a great idea. I'd love to see someone implement that. I'm rather surprised someone hasn't already? I may go looking for such a web app later.

It is perhaps time for us to take our nerd argument offline, since calling a software developer ignorant, regardless of how ignorant they may actually be, is just bound to turn into a heated discussion. I won't pretend to know your background or knowledge, so will refrain from calling you ignorant for the time being :)
I also don't want to rob Abe of his BBQ thread ;-)

But I'll end my public comments by saying that your idea is great, and is exactly what web apps are made for. I can think of nothing specific to your idea that would require a device specific API. Though I am admittedly not intimately familiar with the differences between HTML5 and the major Mobile OS APIs. But I am aware of a number of UI enhancements that are supported by the API, and not HTML5 or other open technology.

To do a web app is to be okay with the lowest common denominator in the market. If that fully encompasses an idea, a web app is perfect.

I feel like we should be having a beer to close out this argument, but I'll settle for a wi-five. At least we can agree that it'd be a pretty neat webapp. Like I said, if I ever pull a free weekend out of my ass, consider it done.

I'd like to have it done in time for the e30 picnic since last year I didn't know anyone and got utterly lost. Would have been invaluable then.

All development discussions should be done with a beer.

That would be awesome for the picnic. Though it would be sad to see all those converging dots, and then notice that a few of them haven't moved from the side of the freeway for a while :(
