May not be much help but I can tell you the Salmon Creek hospital and the area around it is fairly cheap and that hospital is practically brand new. SouthWest Washington Medical center is a dump...just my .02 from a patients perspective.

you dont need to work in vancouver not to pay state income tax, just live there.

thats why I would say the job phenomena is not so great there, it is a lot of people who work in portland and commute.

When describing traffic jams in portland thats who it is those damn vancouverians going back north.

doesnt matter where you work its where you live, if that helps.

Fortunately I have a Portland address to put on my resumes - otherwise I don't think I'd get any attention at all.
You won't pay Washington's Tax, but you'll still be taxed on earnings made in Oregon. I don't live there and still get taxed by Oregon for our property income.

The loopholes in that area are a constantly changing thing.

A lot of people used to get wa licenses and establish a fake po box residence ( and still do) but its been done so much that oregon pulls some of its own shennanigans about taxes

which is what he described getting it withheld just because it was made in oregon and letting you come up with the proof youre not a resident.

            Apply at:

            OHSU
            Shriner's
            Doernbecher

There's always positions open up on the hill. Oh yeah, if you don't move to Portland, don't bother moving. The rest of the state sucks. And Vancouver sucks worse. It's where Portland sends it's poor and stupid. :)

Yeah, I drove through Gresham and my wife was like "We're not ever going to live here".

I'll work wherever - but my preference is to live near downtown Portland. I'd also consider Seattle but she will have to get a WA nursing license first.

Ya but even the worst neighborhood in portland is disneyland compared to a bad neighborhood in a big city. Like tacoma or oakland or something.
When I saw what was supposedly the crime hub of the area, which is the train station at 82nd and burnside, I decided it was the yuppiest sleaze Ive ever seen.
Parts of gresham are pretty ghetto, and third world. But theres not gang members hanging out signing their turf sort of stuff. And gresham is closer to mt hood and the gorge.

Parts of vancouver are pretty tweaky but its mostly middle class. Not a lot of nightlife...
In short even the worst part of portland is pretty cool. I wouldnt mind living in gresham but it wouldnt be a top choice. I worked in gresham when I lived there actually.
Its great cause when youre done with work you can hit the 84 and hit the gorge.

I guess thats not a lot of bright side.

Just out of curiousity... did you and your wife just randomly choose OR? Or do you or her have family there or something?

We have no family in OR - which is actually part of the appeal. About 5 years ago I became interested in moving out of the state for a few reasons. For one, it's way too hot here. Last night at 3 in the morning it was 85 degrees. I hate it. Secondarily, it's not a good fit for us socially. We're not religious and lean left slightly. We basically don't fit in too well with the churchy conservative crowd. Apart from that it's way too materialistic and ugly down here. I did a ton or research and came up with 2 cities that could be cool - Portland and Asheville, NC. I ruled out Asheville due to its distance from the coast. I surf, skate, skimboard and try to snowboard as often as I can. Portland allows for me to do all of those things pretty easily. My wife is a redhead and will enjoy the cloud cover. She burns in less than 30 minutes down here.

To be honest, I saw a documentary about Portland about 3 years ago called "Rip city". I had already considered it as a place to live and that video helped. At that point I pretty much ruled Asheville out - but had to wait for my wife to finish nursing school and acquire some experience. Now that's done. We visited last summer in August and it was too good to be true. She was sold - but we decided it would be prudent to come back in the middle of the winter to see what the big deal was. We visited again in February and still loved it just as much.

I'm not sure how much this plays into my feelings on the matter - but immigration is out of control down here. The ethnic group that I belong to is technically the minority - but I feel that we're often subjected to reverse racism. It's really annoying. I grew up in a super diverse area - both economically and racially - so I have no discriminations at all. I, however, seem to be the quiet recipient of other people's perjudices. I'm sure my religious and social opinions don't help - but I'd like to move somewhere where it's easier to assimilate.

TLDR; I'm tired of Houston. It's too hot, too conservative and the landscape doesn't allow me to fully enjoy my hobbies.

Oh, and I want to DD a 2002 again. You can't drive here without AC - so 2002s have to be a winter car.

The Portland VA (Where I work) is a MAGNET Hospital. Try and get your wife in there. My wife works at OHSU in the ICU and loves it.

I think portland is a good opposite to dallas.

wasteland fat ugly conservative rich people vs poor fit bicycle riding liberal forest people.

Houston is actually sort of a bright star in texas though I think of it as a nice ocean spot for a big city, it has the ocean to run away from the heat in the summer.

Portland is much smaller and covered with different wilderness in all 4 directions.

It is a good trek to the ocean from portland though. I noticed this forum is going to have monthly trips to the ocean from portland driving bmws. That sounds so cool right now to me.

I hear you man. I have lived in the PNW all my life and I absolutely love the culture and geography here. From the sound of it, you will like it up here a lot. Sounds like you would really like Seattle too. Have you been all the way up in this corner?

Portland is a great city too. When I graduated and was job hunting I was looking pretty hard in both the Seattle and Portland areas. Being young and single, I wouldn't have minded at all just uprooting and moving down there. It just happened that I found a job up here first so I stayed.

I wish you and your wife good luck finding jobs. I don't know the medical field at all, but I'm sure it is competitive just like I found out engineering and I'm sure pretty much every other line of work is right now. Keep at it... it sounds like you're motivated so I'm sure something will work out for you soon.

I went to cannon beach this summer and it was an hour and a half from downtown portland. Galveston is an hour from houston and is a toilet leak compared to the oregon coast. The water reaches 90 F in the summer and is chocolate brown. Not my idea of refreshing. When I was in Portland in August it was in the mid to high 70s - when I landed in houston it was 111 F and humid. I had left my car in an outside parking lot and the headliner melted off of the roof. I don't think the 90 degree gulf water cooled it off too much.

I meant to visit seattle in February but ran out of time. I went snowboarding on mt hood instead.
