DOT helmets (like motorcycle helmets) are not race helmets.

SNELL rating makes it a race helmet. If you don't have SNELL 2005 or better most clubs won't let you on the track. And yes, there is still open face SNELL helmets..

I have seen moto-x helmets and DOT helmets used at Sykart, so I would be surprised if they really check for SNELL rated.

I'm not talking about ratings, I'm talking about full face vs open face, IE the two pictures I posted. The black helmet is full or closed face which covers your whole face, including your jaw and chin. The open face does not cover your whole face and they won't allow it, regardless of ratings. It's about the bits of anatomy that the helmet protects, not the rating. Face, not race.
