    Psa: Torque specs matter!!!

    Hey Guys,

I know I'm gonna get flamed for being a dumbass, but whatever. I've seen plenty of guys on here talk about not worrying about torque specs. Well, here's a good case to be mindful. A few months ago I was putting an IE stress bar on my car, was rushing, and torqued the shock tower bolts to 60 ft lbs vs. 16 (I can be a tad dyslexic at times).

Last night, I was cleaning up some injection stuff, realized my mistake when I went to re-install the bar, and while torquing to 16 lbs, this happened. I was supposed to be at the track today and am thankful I popped it last night, not while bombing into turn 1 at PIR. Oh, and GC sells replacement plates for $12/ea. So I'm out $40 bucks with shipping and a few hours to drop the struts and replace.

His point was that he over torqued it. Had he set it to the proper torque setting, it wouldn't have happened.

Ironically, if you had used common sense and no torque wrench this wouldn't have happened.

What he means is, if the OP had evaluated the application (m8 stud into aluminum) and
picked up a 13mm combination wrench, he probably would have pulled it appropriately
tight, not overtorqued the piss out of it.

We've all done it- read the wrong line of the book, used the wrong book, simply
put the wrong number into the wrench. After a while, you get a feel for
'that just isn't right' and do it right, instead.
There are exceptions. VW watercooled head bolts are the most AWFUL feeling
things to do in the world- you stretch the BEJEEZUS oot of the things, and it
feels like they're stripping and shearing and in the end, they don't
                pope, they just work.

But they feel like they've poped. srsly.

now, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george graves

I was referring to a prior conversation OP and I had.
