    ???? M42 automatic ???

Anyone know what automatic tranny would bolt up to a 91 318is. I bought the car back in Nov 2015 because it is in great condition. Now I'm starting to get pain from my knees from sports over the years. Which is why I did not want a 5 speed in the first place. But this 318 was niiice.

I appreciate the feedback and look forward to the chatter. Thanks........ G.

P.S. If I can't find the a comparable 318 auto tranny. I may have to go with an M50 or S52 auto swap. My knees are not having it any other way. Cheers!

A transmission out of an E36 is your best bet for that swap, you'd need a custom crossmember, linkage and probably a driveshaft too. The M20 transmission would fit if you could get the spacing of the flex plate and torque converter right, but it would be tilted which may adversely effect it. With automatic M20 powered E30s being painfully slow, I can only imagine an automatic 318 will be even worse. I would go with an automatic M50 car over an automatic M42 car for sure, automatic M20 powered E30s aren't worth as much as the manuals are, you could probably buy a nice one for less than you could sell your clean 318is for.

@ Varg. Thanks for the feedback but speed and resale are not a consideration. You are right about the M50.and that would probably be my best choice. However an automatic S52 swap is not a bad idea. Gotta kick my budget around and research my options.

@ fresh_TD. I will post some picks later when I get off the clock. I am familiar with the Woodbridge area. I was stationed at Ft. Belvior when I was active duty. Had some great times in Dale City, Lorton, Quantico Town.

        Have a blessed day......... G.

                    Fresh paint x 2 years.
                    E36 antenna mod

                    I have a 10/10 pair of E36 electric seats
I'm thinking of swapping in. They are black leather and they
                    are in great condition.
                    Optima Yellow Top battery.
Husco reconditioned armrest / cup holder

That's all I can think of for now. I'm not selling the car. But it has been a long process and it takes trial and error before you get back in satisfaction what you spend in money.
                    Thanks to my team.

                    Cheers! G.

Not going to lie, it would be bad ass if you retrofitted an hand operated clutch to the car.
