Ultimately the US can do whatever it wants, cut subsidies, can requirements, or any other measure, so long as it is legally passed through the appropriate legislative body and approved by the correct executive. It always pays to remember that the government is a big, bad gorilla and will happily demolish an individual, business or municipality to achieve a goal.

Basically, tough shit giant agribusiness, ethanol as an additive sucks and we just decided to open our eyes to this long understood fact. Ethanol as an independent fuel could work, but not from a corn base.

The ethanol mandate is frustrating at best, maddening at worst. It's counterproductive and based on false assumptions, but it persists because it greases the palms of some very wealthy lobbying groups which have a lot of political influence. You'll notice that a lot of people who argue that it's beneficial are from areas that benefit heavily from the government subsidies, where it's in the best interests of the corn ethanol industry to invest in selling what they're doing to the voters. They have spin on their side too, because what politician in his right mind would do something that would "hurt" our farmers like eliminate this flawed piece of legislation?
