Dream car acquisition; my FD RX-7 adventure

I might be something of a glutton for punishment, I daily drive heavily modified classic BMWs and I am a big fan of the FD RX-7. To me the FD is one of the most beautiful cars ever produced, and it's unquestionably a legendary sports car; one of the best to come out of Japan. FDs were out of reach for me when they were "cheap", and now they're at least no longer out of reach. I had been watching the market off and on for the past year and a half and when this one, configured as I wanted, came up for sale I bought it. I used to think if I ever owned one of these it would be LS swapped, but over the years I've shifted my stance on that, and I want to enjoy one that is basically original, but with some of the things that hamstrung it from the factory fixed.

The first picture I took of it when I got home with it, making my E30 look kind of big:

It's a completely stock 1993 in Montego Blue with no sunroof and a manual transmission. The interior is in incredible shape and the body and paint are in great shape, but not so great that I would be afraid to drive it and give it its first flaw. With 63k on the odometer, it drives nicely and hopefully this 13B has plenty of life left. Unlike my E30 and E34 which I purchased with the explicit intent of modifying, I do not have big modifications planned for my FD. First I'll get it to "stage 0" with maintenance, detailing, and things like worn suspension components and vacuum hoses, I want to know what these were like stock and sorted. Then I will install a downpipe to remove the massive heat source and inevitable failure point that is the pre-cat from the engine bay, and maybe some other bolt-ons like a SMIC, exhaust, and R1 lip, but that remains to be seen. Cosmetically, I really like these cars stock. When I see them they're frequently covered in cosmetic mods which just tend to make the car look worse. It's really hard to out-do what the designers accomplished with the FD. If you hate all things rotary, blame Northern for this thread, he encouraged me to make a non-E30 project thread for it

NIce score. FDs are one of the most beautiful designs in history. Sounds like the one you got is the one to get, no sunroof, and a manual transmission. If taken care of correctly, 13Bs aren't bad engines.

Interested to see how long it remains stock. I drove a similar all-original one recently, and it felt like a car that needed modifications to be good. Like it was right on the verge of being a great car. I hated the seats and seating position, that would probably be the first thing I addressed.

              Love this post!
I lusted after an FD for years, and was casually looking at importing one from Japan. (When it was legal to do so in Canada, and before the USA)
Missed the window for affordability by about 5 years unfortunately.

Excited to see your thread progress!

wow. one of my favorite designs. nice job.
if it's never been done, make sure to change the fuel filter. it's in a horrible location and often gets overlooked as a result of lax maintenance. there are diys on moving it to a better location.

Nice pick up. I always liked these myself. Although they do look badass when modded out, I can respect keeping it stockish. You really don't see them much anymore.

                      Keep it stock?

                      We're watching you, varg.

Wow, crazy how big the e30 looks next to it.... That color looks so damn good on that car..

Congrats, brother. We need the non e30 threads, or else, we'd run out of shit to look at.

Graduation on your FD. I always been a fan of them. I remember them being fast on tracks. My friend bought one a few year ago and let me test drive them on some canyons. It was fun to drive.

                          HELL YEAH

Thank you for making this thread, I love the FD.

A dream car of mine also. Such a beautiful looking car. Agree with the comment about mods making these often look worse.

Also the Rotary is such a cool, quirky engine. Crazy power:weight and just such a crazy concept, and it's half of what makes these cars so damn cool. LS swapping these is such a trash activity.

I don't know much about them other than the arm's length general knowledge. I have never seriously been able to afford one, so I've never looked too deeply into them... following along will be a fun learning experience.

Looking forward to living the ownership dream vicariously lol...

I agree. The stock lines are by far the best. Maybe OE plus on the exterior. I hate when see FD's at meets or the street, looking like time attack cars. Clean body lines make this car timeless. Nice score.
