    M20 to m50 Wiring questions

Sup guys. I'm finally doing my wiring harness and when I opened the m20 harness up I found this. Looks like pin 12 is spliced to a brown wire. Wondering if this is fine and if not how do I fix it? According to rmeuropean pin 12 is the CEL. Thanks bruhs

Some more info, my car was originally a 325is but someone swapped an eta engine in it at some point (found out when I pulled the engine) Is this the remains of that swap?

My harness doesn't have pins 3,8,9,14,15,17,19, or 20. According to AKG it shouldnt have any of those except for pin 14 (AKG says Oil Fault Level Set, RMEuro and Garagistic say Speed Signal)

Here are the links that I'm going by:

Things to note: In our opinion, the best harness for this swap is an early manual 93-94 325I harness. It's simple and can be acquired from any junkyard for cheap. Not to mention, you won't have to sit there and eliminate wires you did not use. However, if you got a harness out of an auto car it can still be used. You c

Perhaps it was wired that way so the check engine light never comes on?

The cel worked before I pulled the engine out though

On a normal m20 harness is pin 12 brown or the green wire? I'm thinking maybe they spliced and repinned it.

Looks like theyre grounding the CEL pin from the ECU for whatever reason.

                  the CEL wire is gray

that looks like a pretty bad hack. It looks like it's connected to pin 6 or 7. there's zero reason to do that.. hopefully it wasn't 7 because that's power from the ignition switch, and 6 on some cars is to energize the ABS relay.

also, I can't believe AKG still has the wrong pin information on their site after all these years. do NOT use that as a guide if you like your magic smoke to stay inside your harness..

The brown wire seems like it goes back into the harness which makes me think it was pin 20 (which on some cars is a brn wire) and plugged it into that CEL wire (non original wire) for some reason?

I dunno. either way, it's badly made and doesn't make a lick of sense.

Well I cut the pigtail and there is no gray wire in the harness at all. Im pretty sure every other color matches up with the guides except for that brown one. If I just splice it can I use pin 12 as the brown one or did they re-pin it and mess everything up?

you'd have to follow that wire all the way to the DME connector and verify the pin. there's no way of telling what it's actually connected to.

if you have a continuity tester/DMM, look up the pin numbers for your DME, find which one is for the CEL, then test and see if it's even connected to that brown wire at all. is it straight brown?

Alright I'll check that later on because my dad has the continuity tester in his car. Yeah the wire is straight brown. Do you think I would just be better off going to the junkyard and getting another c101?
