Rear main seal newbie. "New" style or older spring style? - Kind of sealant?

I'm replacing the rear main seal on my E30, and I need some advice.

I bought both the "New" springless seal from Corteco and the Elring seal with the spring.

Which seal should I be using?

To remove the old gasket material, I'm going to try to find some Permatex Gasket Remover, or similar.

Now, for resealing everything, what should I be using? One of these or something else?
There are two areas to seal.

    1. Between the carrier and seal (like this)

    2. Between the carrier and the oilpan/block.

    I've heard:
    • Curil T
      • Impossible to get around here
    • Permatex "The Right Stuff"
      • For Oil Pan (and also for RMS housing?)
    • Permatex Ultra Grey (EDIT: I think that should be Ultimate Grey)
    • Hondabond/Yamabond Grey
      • I'll have to special order it from a motorcycle shop.

Any other suggestions/information you have about replacing the RMS would be welcome.

I've never done this before, and historically gaskets and myself do not get along well.

Clean the mating surfaces good, the seal is installed evenly and not in an existing groove on the crank. I would use the Corteco without the spring. Make sure to install everything correctly onto the crank with the tool. I use hondabond/yamabond.

I don't really like the spring-less seals all that much.

That being said I answered your question about 6 months ago .... http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/show...15#post4311715

(dirko and yamabond/hondabond are the same, Dirko is generally available to shops via Worlpac).

        So what I'm hearing is:

        • Use the PTFE/Teflon/Springless seal.
        • Use an anaerobic sealant
          • Designed for porous surfaces like the RMS carrier
          • I'm planning to get some Permatex Ultra Grey
        • Make sure the seal and the crankshaft are clean and dry (with brake cleaner
          • The initial friction at startup forms a mated sealing surface.
        • Use the included plastic sleeve when sliding the seal over the crank otherwise it is quite easy to fold the seal
        • Springless seal is harder to install, but done correctly it won't leak.

Could be why my Trans is leaking because I used oil on the inside of the seal

So I've got it all installed.

            I used the springless seal.
Is there any way to tell if the seal has folded over?

Can I throw on a flywheel and start the car with no transmission attached to check for leaks?
