Ryan, A lot of what you say is pretty much on target. But buying a car over the internet requires a lot of ducks be in a row before anyone's going to spring for airfare from Chicago. DMS has done a textbook evaluation on an internet purchase potential for this car. Based on the info he acquired he choose not to pursue it further. There's a lot of learning here for those who grasp the lesson. If he was close like you & could kick the tires, drive it, etc with a 20 min. drive, he could see for himself what was/wasn't right about the car. Too many red flags in this thread to spend any $$ on a flight - way to much risk. If it's a bargain at his asking price then why didn't it sell when it first came on the market. For that matter, it should have traded hands then without an ad.

I agree 100% Jack. A PPI is one of the most neglected steps in purchasing a car and DMS did a great job doing his research. To me a car needs to really be something special and a top notch example for a person to warrant buying a car 2000 miles away. Buying a project car sight unseen 2000 miles away is quite a leap of faith and one that I would not personally take. Unfortunately for someone living in the rust belt you may not have an option.Comment

The shop quoted thousands of dollars worth of work at shop prices. Some of us here are enthusiasts and realize that we can do things ourselves.
Bottom line is that car is worth $$$$. It's not some 84 318.

I'm also going to venture that wild ride is not a DIY type of gal.
Hell.... If you took my 99 e36 m3 to a dealer and it needed fluids (diff, brake, coolant, oil, PS) and brakes that's about $3000 at their prices. Add worn out shocks and struts youre looking at $4500 easy. Does that mean my exquisite example is a roach? No. It means that you don't take a 10 or 20 yr old enthusiast car to a high priced shop. The fluids, brakes and shocks can be done in one Saturday for like 900.
I paid more than this guy for my mtechnic in worse shape and based on the work I've done I think most would state it's the cleanest one they've ever seen.

If the car is not up to your expectations just don't buy it. I bought an '89 vert last year to start my project and paid 4k for it. The car needs to be stripped and painted on rotisserie, I need to replace metal bumpers with full M-Tech, replace engine for S50B32, replace tranny, install coilovers, intall big brakes, replace steering column, install new interior, replace hood and windshield, build custom exhaust and replace roof.
I already got my hands on some BBS RS I paid 2.2k for.
If you're going to buy a classic, don't expect it to be in showroom condition for under 20k. You may find a very clean one for 10-15k.

I'm a huge DIY guy and am in the middle of a motor swap right now on my buddies car and have done several head gaskets,parted out 3 cars, Fully restored an e30 from the ground up, done a full interior redye etc etc. I think you are referring to DMS. Its ok to not be a DIY guy, it just means you have a different perspective when purchasing and maintaining a car.

fyi: mtech 2 cars are worth roughly double the price of a similar condition e30 cabrio. however, since you are a noob, we can't expect you to know this. instead of trashing the op because his car doesn't meet your unrealistic expectations(for a given price range) or others in the future, do some research first.

WildRide's thoughts echo mine as well. You're buying a 25 year old car that is original and tired. Most of that stuff on the list is maintenance related. I pretty much laugh at that list. Did they measure tire tread depth as well? brake pad thickness? That's really nitpicking for a PPI of a 25 year old car and they did a great job but take it for what it's worth. To you it was a deal breaker but to many of us, that's leverage to get a better price and a weekend worth of work tops. Just not a big deal as you make it seem and the thing is you are just going by what Chris says so you yourself can't form your own opinion on it. Anyway, goodluck with your search.

If you choose to defend a dishonest seller simply because they have "clout" on this forum, you are a fool or a cheat. If you've seen the car in person and think it to be just fine... have you driven and/or performed a PPI on said vehicle?
I have owned a 1987 535is (among several other vehicles) for nearly ten years, and am sufficiently familiar with E30s. My budget is not fixed at $4-5k by any means. It is entirely dependent upon the specific car in question. If a car is worth $4-5k, and it fits my criteria, I will buy it. If meeting my criteria requires $8k, then sobeit.
My problem is the fact that the seller misrepresented the automobile to fit my criteria. It just so happens the car is being sold at a price of $4.5k. Perhaps what you think to be "acceptable" is entirely unacceptable to someone with the means to address it. I have attended classic car shows, auto auctions, car club meetings, etc. since I was very young. What is "ratty" to one person may be "concours" to another. My tastes and attention to detail are more refined, so I respect the opinions of those with similar thoughts (Chris at LJI). When a seller presents a car to me as being in "excellent condition", I expect it to at least meet my definition of "okay". This car is not even near "okay" according to Chris.
The auto sales transaction breaks down when someone (typically the seller) lies. Private party auto sales rely upon honesty to make any sense for both parties. If the seller wants a better price for his/her car than he would get trading in to a dealer, he/she should sell honestly to a private party. If the buyer wants a better deal than at a dealer, he or she must find a vehicle that meets their needs from a private seller. The only way to mitigate dishonesty is a PPI or personal expertise. A PPI from a noted expert tells me this car is not worth $4.5k.
I suggest many of you Google the word "couth" and consider trying it out sometime. Stop assuming "Noobie" next to a username means "pimple-faced 16 year old" (no offense to those of you!). I'm a practicing physician in my 30s with two children.
