I recommend you at least pull the board out or take a picture for these older generations. BMW ran through several board versions for the earlier clusters. Or just send it to me, I will have the batteries for it.

i recently did mine (new batteries) and can solder.
but, after replacement, i was finally able to reset the service lights, and reset the inspection light (which was not working prior) among the tach + analog mileage faults. but not all was well.

i still have a sporadic tach, and the analog mileage guage reports randomly (always constant..either 40+, 30, 20, or 0...when i start the car, it will find one place, and stick there.

the tach will bounce off the 0 pin, or it will work normally.

is this a board issue ? as you say, needs to be re-flowed ?

      i have this board

From the picture I see you have not replaced the batteries but perhaps its an old picture. Since you have replaced the batteries and you continue to see issues, I would suggest you inspect all solder joints on the SI board, Cluster Main board, and rear of Tach/Eco gauge.

If all checks out, you cannot rule out the possibility that the Tach/Eco gauge has failed (electrical motors have failed) and you will need to swap it with a known working unit.

:D yep..replacement is seen here..as i have recently done it, but that was my best pic...

i did the remote location install, of new batteries, and ya know what...
just after i posted this, *(well, my last post), i left work, and the tach and econometer have been working fine ever since...

it was hit and miss..fluctuating between working and not, and i took a small video of it, then it started to work..so, im thinking, this indicates faulty leads ? ....needing a re-flow on the board.

or, (hopefully) the new batteries charged up all the way, and now tis behaving ?

or would / could bad flow be fluctuating ? (i presumed it was a on / off thing)

Could be solder joints require re-flow or the batteries might not have been charged all the way but every battery I've ever installed had lots of life, even when sitting on shelf for who knows how long. good luck.

UPDATE: All sold but I still have batteries left. Will have more cores available soon

I've got three more SI boards with Lithium batteries available for purchase. These have brand new batteries and were carefully inspected under magnification for solder cracks. I rate these boards 10/10.

                Time to get busy...

From left to right....Motometer, Liselle?, Motometer

These boards will fit all clusters which use Lithium batteries, VDO or Motometer from 1986 to 1991. Please check or lookup before purchase.

Still 1 left for those looking for a good SI board. Its the newer style for clusters with coding plug on front.

All sold out. I have batteries so anyone needing their boards inspected and batteries replaced, I can still do that. Will have more cores with new batteries very shortly.

Hey Greg, i have a question for you since you seem to know more about these boards than most.

I have just put my e30 m3 back together after its long nap, and for some reason the tach is not working properly.
When i rev the car up, it just lazily goes up to 1500-2000rpm slowly and drops down to around 200 or so. The motor doesnt do any of this, just the tach.

Also my temp gauge "twitches" a little.

My si board is four years old and was purchased new, but my car is rarely driven. Its been driven less than 1000 miles in that time. Could the si batteries be acting up due to being unpowered for so long? The cars battery has been removed since November.

                              Any ideas?

Surely sounds like bad SI board batteries. This is a very common symptom of batteries that are near discharge. Since your board is semi-new, I would continue to drive it for a few more hours and hope they will retain a charge. If your cluster continues to act up, I would suggest you replace the batteries or SI board.
