That write up was confusing. showed just taking off the first selector rod clip what about the front one? Are you guys installing the z3 2.8 levers with the driveshaft in place? I could not get my hands behind the damn driveshaft balancer to get the front clip off. Need to get the selector rod out to give it a bend. Wasted a lot of time today trying to do this lol.

The shift lever can easily be changed without removing the driveshaft and/or exhaust.

Thank you for the info. I will try to also pull up a better DIY for this.

Id there a different DIY for early model cars?

Do I need the spring, metal ring from the old shifter?

I believe the Z3M is the shortest throw and the E60 545i is the 2nd shortest.

The Z3 lever is about a cm shorter than the stock E30/E60 shifter as far as the height for the shift knob goes. For the actual throw reduction, because of the longer lever extended from the bottom of the pivot point on the E60 shifter compared to the Z3 shifter, the percentage reduction is actually greater, not by a whole lot though.

I tried looking for another DIY for you to no avail, you will not need the bearing white bush for the late style shifter, in place, you will need the metal ring and new C-Clip. Usually for removing the C-Clip there are tools made for it, however I just use a pick and a flat head to pry/pop it off.

It was a pain in the ass... most ghetto thing I've ever done to my car haha. I will not share how I did it just for the shear fact I don't think it was a good idea.. anywho! Thanks

MR325 said with E60 rod didn't have to be bent, but I am getting rub in Reverse, 2nd, and 4th. Weee....
