Yesterday on eBay there was an early style round expansion tank NOS,it was exactly like the originals unlike all of the white plastic reproductions ,I do not know if it still there but should not be hard to find.

An option Ive wanted to see someone try is to use the overflow line that the E34 M5 uses. Its overflow outlet is on the driver side, same as the late model/E36/Z3 radiators, but has the overflow on the pass side, same as the early model. Tried to pull it up in realoem, but their server is down.
You can kind of see it in this pic.
I dont know for sure if it would work, but it would be a good alternative to look at rather than running the smaller radiator. I successfully used a M42 though and its not horrible
