Here is a pic. Although its not terrible, the rust was very understated/misrepresented by the PO.
unfortunetly were it is located you will have to cut and weld it.

remember to remove all trim on the areas you will be welding, i would suggest you drop the exhuast also.

purchase corrosion protection spray, so you can spray on the inside of you trunk and purchase undercoating so you can spray it behind the rear valance.
that area is textured so purchase paintable texture spray and apply it before paint. as far as i can tell that area was painted but if it just flat black then just get flat black texture spray.
    hope this helped

      Agreed.

I'f it was lightly pitted you could get by filling it but if its through any filler will eventually have moisture build up and start to rust again.

Also make sure you properly seal bare metal before painting. I'm a BIG fan of southern polyurethanes (spi) stuff. They make a great epoxy primer that seals bare metal very well and than filler can be applied on top of it.

This is very very very very helpful thank you immensely!

I'm guessing I will need to do the same for the spot under the right taillight as well? Minus the texture part of course.

Any recommendation on metal gauge and type? Mild steel?

                Oliver,

I'm not sure if you have experience with rubber mouldings/trims on e30's mid-section or similar cars but are these items even paintable? It seems like paint won't ever lay or adhere to it in my experience.

In addition, you once mentioned that primer isn't necessary for plastic products because they have no pores like metal. However, when does a situation warrant it on plastic?

dont paint the side moldings, they will look crappy in a few months, use that back to black stuff, works better.

you do need to primer plastic if you are repairing damage on it, if it is brand new it is not needed.
if you are going to primer it always use flexible primer

what makes it crappy? is it simply the physical properties of rubber?

Plasti dip on the moldings come out pretty good and last quite a bit.

rubber is a lot more flexible than paint will ever bee.
it also expands and contracts a whole lot.

plasti dip is a excellent choice, its pretty much spray on rubber
