To answer your question though, I've seen OBD-1 M52's put out more power than S50's with just an engine management upgrade.
Here is an example dyno graph of a modded (OBD1, S52 cams, 3.5" MAF, stock 21.5 lb-hr injectors) M52 versus a stock/unmodded S52:
The comparison to S50 will be similar, with the S50 torque curve being between the modded M52 and stock S52..
