Does that mean you're coming to AZ? :)

Based on some the dyno charts I've looked at, that seems more than optimistic. Like even up 20 hp, on an obd-I m52 with m3 came, chip, exhaust.

Yeah, a 225rwhp M50 would put it on par with an S54B32 for specific output...

To answer your question though, I've seen OBD-1 M52's put out more power than S50's with just an engine management upgrade.
He's right. However, a modded M52 is still down on torque to both S50 and S52. You fix that with forced induction :p

            Here is an example dyno graph of a modded (OBD1, S52 cams, 3.5" MAF, stock 21.5 lb-hr injectors) M52 versus a stock/unmodded S52:

The comparison to S50 will be similar, with the S50 torque curve being between the modded M52 and stock S52.

It is optimistic, but certainly not impossible.

How do you figure? On a dynojet most will put down around 275-280 and I know one that put down 290 stock.

                mmm torque!

it looks from the dyno graph that the S52 is being choked off at high RPM, seeing how the cams, head and intake are the same. a similar upgrade to the S52 should be impressive.

                    I was talking displacement-specific output.

                    290/3.2 = 90.6 hp/L
                    225/2.5 = 90 hp/L

Specific output, ie, HP per liter.

wait, you're talking about the M52B25? isn't that the one that's limited to like 170bhp from the factory? because the M52B28 is probably what we're thinking of.

That's why I can't wait to have the OBD-I S52 in the car.

The S52 is making as much whp stock at 3500 rpms as the M20 does at peak.

Meh dont worry about it, you would have destroyed him. My E36 M3 pulled away from one from 70-95. The guy wanted to go so badly, but I didnt even care to. I mashed the loud pedal to check out a Porsche 993 that was getting ready to exit. When I lifted he pulled past and shot me "the look". Whatever..

M3 Eater-- Nice graph. I need to dyno mine.
