On a s50b30, how does one identify a bearing knock? what symptoms should one see , a knocking noise obviously but how loud and where?
please help.... btw. the car still drives fine
depends on how bad the knock is. i suggest buying one of those cheap mechanic's stethoscopes from harbor freight. just hook it up to your ears and set the probe on various parts of the engine until you hear the sound the loudest. if you think it is the lower end, put your car on a lift or jack stands so you can get under it with the probe. at least this will give you an indication. another thing to check would be your vanos perhaps. they have a tendency to make a clacking sound when they go bad. i don't think it would sound like a rod knocking, but then it depends on your mechanical experience whether you would recognize the difference. maybe a reputable repair shop would be a good idea also
416 stroker: come on man. i have no issue with you, and it is true that you make a good contribution to this forum. it is also true that this guy could have asked his question a little more intelligently, but we don't need to talk to people like that here. i could understand if he was trying to come across as a douche bag, but he is asking a serious question. for me at least, this forum is about helping fellow members with advice. keep in mind that we all have different abilities. when i first started using this forum, i had a few butt hole responses to my posts. its not cool.

Thanks flyboyx.....
im sorry but i could have asked it better i agree....
anyway this is very serious for me....
the thing that really getting me confused is when i used the car on a distance yesterday then the noise was there even when idling before i parked it off...
This morning i started it up and the noise was gone.... maybe it comes with engine temperature??? the only slight knocking sound i heard this morning was the belt tensioner that was making a noise (came in contact with some water, rain)
Mileage?
Did you change bottom end shells before the swap?
If the knock is absent when cold, and comes in as the car warms up, then it is probably a rod bearing.
Typically there is some slap that goes away as the engine warms, but converse behaviour is bearings.

m
the mileage on the motor since the build is 4000km... new bearing shells ....
it comes after a long while after the car warms up... i did about 30km before the noise started yesterday from cold
Pull the pan and check the bottom end.
someone torqued the bottom end bearings wrong?
Noise from cold now may mean you have a spun bearing shell that has broken up.
Also pull the accessory drive belt off and check for loose drive pulleys....outside chance but can sound like rod knock as the pulley flaps.
IF you think its a belt tensioner, pull off the belt and listen. IF it goes away start your search there if it doesn't well now you can look closer at the engine.
!!!!!!!!!!DO NOT RUN YOUR MOTOR FOR VERY LONG WITHOUT A BELT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YOU WILL OVERHEAT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
