    cam sensor pinout

trying to find out what the pins on the cam sensor do... some quick searching gets me:

    1. red +5v
    2. green signal
    3. black ground/shield

    but my sensor has a yellow, red and black wire. part # 12 14 1 703 221

    anyone know for sure?

Got a multimeter? If not, pick one up. I even have a cheap digital one from harbor freight that is indispensable.

Your sensor is an OBD2, is the pinout info for an OBD1 part?

a multimeter isn't going to help me with the sensor. I don't have anything to hook it up to yet ;) but yes, I do have one.

farbin - Yeah, the post I found that in said ODB1, but that's all I could find. they're both hall effect, though.

came across somebody using this sensor with Motec - looks like yellow pin is the signal, red is +5v and black is ground.

That is correct. The sensor gets power and ground, the middle wire (yellow) is the signal. It can be tested by applying to power and ground.

Connect the center wire to +5v through a 10k Ohm resistor. (pull-up resistor). Your +5v source will need to also be connected to the ground wire.

Measure the voltage on the yellow wire and it should be at +5v until you place the sensor on something ferrous, then it will drop to 0.

yeah, the only bummer is the pins on the Motronic 1.3 impulse sensor plug are opposite of the E36 sensor. So I need to swap the ground and signal pins.
