plus the valve stems are thicker. that means the valves are actually heavier..

Not really... I would rather have vanos than the marginally more aggressive profiles any day.

it's the cheapest 24v motor and everyone parrots the "M50NV is best for boost" mantra.

if you really wanted to be serious about the "best" 24v motor for boost, you'd consider the M54, which is what the 335i motor is based on.

I'm buying an s50. Would it take around 10lbs of turbo boost safely? Why is the s50 not good for boost when the m50/52 are? Does it have higher compression than the smaller motors? What are the crank/rods/pistons on an s50 made of?

From my experience in the Atlanta area it seems the 'best' is the M52. Things like thicker cylinder walls are something that is a benefit for big boost. Also as I understand they seem to be able to take the most boost when bone stock before popping. They aren't expensive like an S5X and can make the same power with a snail on them. Even for an N/A swapped car I would grab an M52(which is what I am doing).

Want to stay N/A? S52 cams, 3.5" intake, exhaust, M50 and tune. It is faster and cheaper than S52. Cash in the pocket for something else. S/C and can get to S52 supercharged for less money. Boost? Same deal. Use the leftover cash to put it into the budget.

If you are thrifty an M52 + Centrifugal supercharger can be had for equal cost to an S52.
