e30 temp. gauge for M50 question

For those guys who have the temp gauge in the original gauge cluster with the M50 swap
what does your gauge read at normal temp?
Mine reads at the third mark not a bit over, I wonder if the M50 temp sensor sends out a different voltage than the m20?
Or does the M50 run slightly hotter?

I have a large Northern radiator and large fan so the cooling should be adequate.

they have different resistance curves, you're supposed to drill/tap a hole and use the E30 temp sender.

you shouldn't have to drill or tap. Just put the brown M20 sender in the second hole. I believe the first connector is blue, that one stays...the second sender is black, which gets replaces with the brown one.

it might depend on OBDI or OBDII. but either way, you need the E30 sender.

I know this is an old thread but can somebody post some pics of the e30 sender and where the second hole is? Many thanks.

It's also a very cheap part, something like $6-9.

I noticed my m50 is running normal (middle in the gauge) but when I let it it idle for 5-10 minutes it stays at almost the third mark. full cooling system was replaced (waterpump, thermostat, bmw coolant, e36 radiator, etc. So I'm guessing the sensor is the culprit, correct? Thanks e30

You replace #13, the second one back from the front of the head. It should just thread right in, you most likely won't need an adapter.

Not all 24V motors have a second hole.

One more thing. I have no fan installed except the e30 pusher fan. Is this ok to run? Sorry for the lame questions..

                            It's a M50BTU from a 95 525. Would this have a second hole?
