It's only supposed to have 2 holes. The BLACK temp sensor gets replaced with the BROWN E30 one. The BLUE sensor remains as usual.

      I think?

Yes and no, you need to lower the fan temp switch or it wont barley ever turn on....

I noticed my m50 is running normal (middle in the gauge) but when I let it it idle for 5-10 minutes it stays at almost the third mark. full cooling system was replaced (waterpump, thermostat, bmw coolant, e36 radiator, etc. So I'm guessing the sensor is the culprit, correct? Thanks e30
        bruhs!
If your gauge is reading at all you have the E30 sender already in there. If the E36 one was in there it would just peg out. And no it sitting at the 3/4 mark is not good/normal.

This thread is ancient but I still need to know if I take the brown top temp sensor out of my m20, will it thread into my s50 motor out of a 95 M3? Or do I need to do it in the first place? THANKS

Yes, it should be a direct fit in the middle hole where a plug should currently reside.

Remove plug and then thread in temp sender. Of course if the head has been replaced with a later casting you may need to explore other options such as drilling and tapping the middle hole or removing the nipple for the throttle body heater hose and re-threading your sender to M12x1.5 to match that hole.

I have still yet to figure out what the situation is on my S50 but I had to turn down and rethread the E30 temp sender to make it fit. My head has three holes, two temp sender holes and a throttle body heater hole.
