rattles
Im sure you are aware its so very common for this noise after these engines are run hard at hi rpm....
try a better oil...and overfill a bit...and then re consider your vanos.
I track my s50(98k)....after the swap i ran one 20 min session w/ rotella and it was scary loud.....people came over and said WTF?..
.I then went to Mobil 1 15 50 w/ an overfill.....she barely makes that noise anymore.....Last edited by JRKOUPE; 10-03-2011, 01:56 PM.I love sitting down and just driving!Comment

When I come to this junction, I plan on giving my money to VAC motorsports. Seems like you get "stage 2" work at $250, and from an excellent shop IMO with facilities and knowledge that are hard to top.
VAC always gets very mixed reviews...I love sitting down and just driving!Comment

lol, at not even checking the diagram that I have posted twice...and just reading the descriptions.
So 40 minutes and 6 beers should cover it?

I'm using mobil1 15w50 with 1/2 quart over full. I'm used to some valve ticking after a few hard runs. The noise I heard on Sunday was different and easily sourced from the vanos area. It did, however, go away after sitting a few minutes.

I also had the common Vanos noise, and had my shop install the Besian washer that tightens it up. (I didn't have time otherwise I would have fixed it myself.) I do not believe the Dr Vanos to be the only viable solution, in fact if I were to need a new Vanos, I would use a Dr Vanos kit with the Besian washer.
As far as lifter noise, changing to mobile 1 5w-50 (here in warm California) with a slight overfill also solved it as others stated. Just drain the overfill when done with the event IMO.

If you go Dr Vanos, just do stage 1.
Also, VAC is ridiculously overpriced on everything. But I don't live in a BMW internet fantasy land.Comment

I'd wager on 2 minutes/10 beers if you don't have A/C. On my car I'd have to depressurize the system or move the compressor to pull it (line adapters get in the way), so make it 20 minutes.2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4WD LBZ/Allison

I like your style! ;)
No AC here, I'll swap it out soon and drop an update in here for the OP and everyone else.

I highly recommend Besian's kit. As long as you have access to a vice its not difficult to rebuild at all. The seal takes maybe 5 minutes and the rattle kit as little as half an hour
I've got nothing to really back this up, but I don't see there being enough wear and loss to friction on the chain gears to warrant an extra $150 bucks for REM coating.I don't always wreck cars, but when I do I wreck them into trees.
