    M/S50 obd2?

So here's the deal, I got an m50 for my 97 318i, it's a 3.0 liter stroker. I am converting it to obd2, I bought the motor not thinking about emissions, I don't have them but the future might. I'm preparing for it, I've got too much money into it to sell for m52. Euro obd2 z3 with a 2.8 used a crank sensor mounted like the m50 and s50 and run off the ms41.1 computer that I'm going to run. Aside from swapping sensors to run obd2 was that the only difference from the obd1 and 2 engines, the crank sensor mounting location? I can use any insight that will help me as I've never touched obd2 wiring in a 6cyl yet so this is a bit of a task, maybe if someone can post there obd2 to obd1 conversion or build thread I can reverse it and change out what they took off... Any help will be great! Thanks again

crank sensor mounting location is the same. OBD2 IIRC uses a hall sensor for the crank sensor and not a VR sensor. Not sure about the cam sensor. I believe those are the same. There's just more sensors. If you want to go full emissions, you'll need OBD2 headers with the full egr pump and crap. Generally, you won't find anyone taking OBD2 out. You'll see someone with an OBD2 engine with all the parts you need already off it.

    Status: HG repair. 488wtq though!

Awesome so I'm glad to hear this can work, I need to find all the stuff someone took off when they did an obd1 swap

        basically. Why wouldn't it work?

The crank sensor location is what was making this the problem but the euro hall sensor runs on the front wheel like an m50 so I feel positive that this is going to work well

I dunno about euro. I have an S52 timing cover and ran OBD1 stuff. I see no reason why it wouldn't work the other way.

The obd1 motors use a vr sensor(magnetic) on the timing chain cover, obd2 run a hall sensor in the engine block behind rod journal 6. They both read the same type of wheel, a 60/2. Using the obd1 setup on the crank will not work as its. Dif sensor. I can't run the hall sensor in the block as obd1 block has no hole for it. The euro z3 uses a hall sensor up front like the obd1 vr sensors. That is the only "oem" way I have been able to gather this far

The OBD2 motors have 2 sensors. one in the stock location and one in the block. So there still is the provision for the OBD1 VR front crank sensor. Except you will need the OBD1 trigger wheel. I think... No probably not.

Hmm I did not know that.. That's interesting for sure. I know the euro m52 used it only on the front like the m50's. The cam sensor and trigger wheel are 130 bucks for both oem. Should be plug and play. I have to do more research haha nobody has interest in converting an engine to obd2 I guess as there's no info on it . I like challenges when I can over come them, this is a fun build tho as its more a hobby build, don't need the engine just wanted to do it for the fun of it as I get time and money it's gets closer kind of thing, thank you for all the input you've provided me, everything helps

Look up user 328junkie on this forum. He will have answers for you regarding running OBDII management on an older engine.

No they don't. The OBD2 engines use the sensor in the rear of the block. You're right, the timing cover has the spot for the sensor but they came with no sensor there.

Mine came with a hall sensor on the front.... Maybe someone put it there for giggles?

cam sensors are totally different. OBD2 cam sensors are neither hall nor VR.
