I wasn't stock when I had the new cats. I had the Red label 413 with TRM chip
3.5 MAF with stock e30 airbox, Headers, New Walker cats, Pink injectors, 91 octane

now that you've gone back to stock chip and injectors you *also* need to use the correct octane (87) for your engine.

make sure everything is stock before you attempt another test. make sure you are using fresh fuel and fresh oil. new plugs. not burning oil. Correct thermostat. Coolant system fully operational. The internals of the cats are the same. If the ref fails you on visual you should still pass in regard to exhaust so long as everything else is back to stock and fully functional.

Would having wrong ignition coils cause any problems? I just notice I have the Bosch 0221504410 coils and they are not for the 95 M3... Or are all e36 coils the same? They fit perfect of the valve cover BTW.

          Coils are the same.

          Why not run ALL stock parts for smog;

          Stock chip
          Stock airflow meter
          Stock injectors
          Fix any vacuum leaks

You won't pass with any stuff that doesn't match; also shouldn't pass with an aftermarket chip

It's not very cool to have useless modifications that cause no smog.

I already replaced everything with stock. Ill be doing a smoke leak test to check any vacuum leaks. I see a lot of people passing with a chip and bigger injectors with no problem though, thats why im puzzled.

Put in some stock OBD2 cats (and give them a citric acid wash first).

OBD 2 cat is not 'stock' to his install. He needs/has CARB /Calif approved replacement cats.

Every vehicle is different, though. It's difficult to trace where the problem is without everything being stock and having a baseline. I passed with a chip for several years and then I wasn't able to. I had to go through what you are for nearly a year and it sucks man...I feel for you that's for sure. I never was able to find someone willing to do or knowledgable about smoke tests. We need to make a machine given the amount of times I see the so cal group in need of a test

And I forgot to say the other day that I'm pretty sure the tech is confusing the resonators for cats when he says BMW told him you're supposed to have four cats. Bring an iPad or laptop with realoem pulled up to a '95

I don't know why you would use a 3.5" maf with a stock tune to try & pass emissions

That must really confuse the DME

Chip is tune for the 3.5 MAF. I didnt remove the MAF after because I dont have a spare stock MAF

Time to buy a stock MAF and stock ship. This is IF you wish to pass smog; if you want to keep failing just try again with aftermarket parts.

I have a tune for 3.5" MAF (although I took it off and put a stock one on because it does nothing), 21# injectors, headers and a TRM tune for it all. I'm due for smog and hope I pass...

                            Good luck OP.

Have you passed before with that setup?

Negative. I passed with a chipped M50 and basically a straight pipe (no material left in the cats) but this tune is more aggressive.
