    M50 dme

    Guys need some help.
Try`n to get to the bottom of a few things on my e30.
The engine is a single VANOS m50, NOW I was look`n at fitting a chip to it and found the DME is a red tag 402 unit. Can I do a straight swap to a red tag 413??

Any input would be great people!!!!!

I was under the impression that the 402 and 403 DME's were for non-vanos motors?

      I don't know, This how I got the e30 . It's a single vanos motor.
I runs and drives great but but just can't understand why I doesn't go harder.
So I looked it at the dme and the tag is red with the last 3 numbers of 402.

402, 402 and 405 are m50b25 and b20 engine dme's 413's are for m50b25tu engines plus a few other dme's. They will both connect to OBD I harness's. You cannot connect a OBD I to a OBD II. Like harness for like DME or ECU how ever you want to call it.

Yea man it sounds like you're running a NV DME on a vanos motor. Could be why it doesn't feel quite right.

                Wrong ecu for that engine.

                  That is definitely a 402 for a non-vanos.

Nice little read on the 402

Plug in a 413 red label. Report back your findings. Odd that it runs.

I would say yes, it's what should be in there.

This. Especially with the differences in MAF and lack of knock sensors between a NV and Vanos motor.

Sadly no one has a red tag 413 in my part of the world so I brought one of eBay. Should see it in a few weeks.

                            Thanks guys for your input.
