VAC made a custom adapter so that my oil temp sender plugs (OE) into the oil filter housing on my builtup S52. Signal runs to E30 m3 cluster for a working oil temp gadge. Look up my post/pic on this and see if will work for you too. Joe

its ALL about the coding plug...forget what cars they come from, and there are 5 that i can think of off hand
4cyl 5k
4cyl 7k
6cyl 5k
6cyl 7k
4cyl 8k(M3)
There is no such plug that is a 6cyl 8k.... and this is what you need to make the tach work correctly... the electronics dont care what faceplate is sitting behind the needles.

So if I'm putting an M3 cluster in my 318is, why would I need to swap the coding plug? They're both 4cyl engines, so shouldn't I just leave the M3 coding plug in the M3 cluster?
stupid question: If I use the e28 m5 coding plug (s38b36) in an e30 m3 cluster, would it read correctly?
Yes, I have an e30 M3 cluster in my s50 325. I used the coding plug from the 325i cluster and the tach was off like others mentioned. I changed out to the coding plug from an e28 m5 and all is working great now. FYI, the M5 plug is not a direct swap, I had to open it up and take out the chip to swap into the M3 code plug case.

Well, you need the ecu for the oil, coolant, and tach. But even if you ran it as a slave running nothing but the cluster, it could still be cheaper... And lighter!
