E30s are just like Hondas. As long as you're replacing an engine with the same type as you removed.
Be sure to order new muffler bearing before you do anything else on the swap.Comment

I have to admit that there is no good M/S5* swap thread for noobs.
for example http://www.r3vlimited.com/BOARD/showthread.php?t=147862
What are the major basic required parts?
Problem is that person new to BMW will not know what E34,E28,E21 means, then will get more confused after buying oil pan from 1989 E34 525i and finding out that he has bought a wrong pan. Then go buys 1995 E36 318i mount arms and finds out that he bought wrong arms...etcetera.Engine: m50, m52, s50, s52, complete with wire harness, ECU, accessories.
E34 525i oil pan, oil pump, dipstick
E36 engine mount arms
E28 motor mounts
E34 throttle cable

There is a wealth of M/S5X swap information available on this forum if one is willing to put in just a little bit of effort reading.I have to admit that there is no good M/S5* swap thread for noobs.

Same goes for the chassis designations. A quick trip to Google (likely ending up on Wikipedia) and some reading will result in the necessary knowledge. For pretty much anyone with high school level reading comprehension, that knowledge - combined with the research they've done on the subject - will parlay into deductive reasoning that they should be buying parts which fit the 24v engine they are swapping in, and not the same oil pan or mounts from a four cylinder.Comment

To actually answer your question...no you dont need to cut anything for the tranny. If you use a getrag, you will need a custom tranny mount bracket. If you use the ZF trans, then it should fit perfectly with original mounts and tranny bracket. I used the '89 325i trans bracket (I think they are all the same, but dont quote me on that.)
The only headache with this swap was the brake booster. The intake manifold will need to be trimmed a little bit. I also drilled each hole for the brake booster 1/2 inch towards the fusebox. And then modified the clevis. (You can find a bunch of info on this by searching the forum.)
I used original m20 trans mounts with the ZF trans. And I used the green e34 engine mounts with a 1/4 in spacer on top of the mounts.Comment

Seriously?! I did my first 24v swap years ago solely based on information thru this website. Anyone who doesnt know how to use search engines to find BASIC information regarding chassis designations probably shouldnt be tackling an engine swap.

This op is kid I think. He's posted a few really stupid topics. I'm guessing his first time on a forum. Either way. Has no business swapping anything, sell your car and buy a new one. Save us the classics.F80 M3 Alpine

Not everybody is smart as you and me and use real desktop computer with big screen to look for information. New generation of kids 16-20 use their small mobile device to look up everything. On that small screen they can't see much, browsing is a hassle. In fact written instructions are going out of style, people are too lazy to read, they want instructional videoComment
